Valley Springs Blood Drive This page will inform the community of Valley Springs of local blood drives performed through Blood Source.

This page is set up to keep the community of Valley Springs informed on the local blood drives that take place every other month through Blood Source. Blood Source brings 1-2 trucks the last Tuesday of every other month to the parking lot of Valley Springs Sports and Fitness to draw blood from volunteers.

Due to the devastation caused by Camp Fire, there are severe Blood Product Shortages for the central and Northern California and southern Nevada Hospitals serviced by the Vitalant (BloodSource) blood bank.

Our VS Community Blood drive tomorrow will have three Blood Mobiles (buses) present in the VS Health and Fitness parking lot. Two busses will collect whole blood from donors and the third bus will collect much needed packed red cells to fill immediate needs. The Apheresis process would take approximately a half hour. Donors of packed red cells will not be eligible for donation for 112 days. Blood types O, A- or B- are the preferred types for this process. Buss staff will solicit candidates and further explain the process and the need. Please consider their appeal.

Tuesday, November 27th will be your last chance to donate this year!
After 14 years of bi-monthly Blood Drives our donor whole blood unit count is at 3988 units. We expect to shatter the 4000 unit count on this November drive.

The significance of that number is that potentially our little community may have helped the quality of life of up to 12,000 patients. Less than 1% of collected blood exceeds shelf life and is discarded. Ergo, 99% of Calaveras/Valley Springs donated blood has been used,

We just don't know who received it. Kind of medal worthy community valor......just saying.

Pre-Donation Tips:
1. drink plenty of water the day before the blood drive and drink at least 8 ounces of water, fruit juice or non caffeinated beverage 2-3 hours prior to donating
2. Avoid alcohol and caffeine at least 24 hours prior to donating
3. eat a meal prior to donating
4. get a good night's rest before donating.

Hey friends and neighbors, drink plenty of water the day before you donate to you can have a safe and effective donation. Also, increase your iron intake if that is something that is an issue when you donate. Leafy greens and vitamin C help with iron and absorption of iron-rich foods (i.e. Total Cereal). The number are in from yesterdays Blood Drive and great numbers they are. We registered 70 willing donors, collected 61 units of whole blood and welcomed 13 new donors. We exceeded our 😊projection by 13 units. The Valley Springs donor base never disappoints. Thanks to all!
