October is Energy Awareness Month. Three cheap fixes before the heat runs during the night: a fresh HVAC filter, weatherstripping on doors where you can see daylight, and ceiling fans reversed to push warm air down.

Gaining just 1 mpg saves roughly $57 every 1,000 miles at current diesel prices.

So how do you do that?

Here's a few tips. My favorite is #7.
1. Slow down
2. Travel on low wind days if possible. A rig traveling 60 mph into a 20 mph headwind is effectively facing an 80 mph airflow.
3. Route choice matters. Grades, traffic, stops and average speed all affect how much fuel a vehicle burns. Google maps can help with planning.
4. Cruise control. On flat roads, it can keep speed steady and help avoid unnecessary acceleration. On rolling or mountainous terrain, though, cruise control may pour on throttle and force repeated downshifts just to cling to an exact speed
5. Shop for fuel by planning ahead. A 30-cent-per-gallon gap saves $15 on a 50-gallon fill.
6. Maintain your tires. Proper inflation reduces rolling resistance and can help fuel economy a bit.
7. The easiest fuel to save is fuel you never burn. Stay an extra day at your destinations. Combine errands. Pick a campground closer to what you came to see. Explore town in a smaller vehicle, on bicycles, or on foot if that makes sense.

Oct 17, 1998 - 20 years ago, it rained over 11 inches in one day in San Antonio. Some of you may remember it. This is a shot of Hwy 281 at Basse Rd, looking north. Quarry Market is in upper right corner. Till that time, it was the most damaging flood Hidden Valley RV Park had ever experienced.
We are happy to now have an upper park level providing a safe haven even during the largest rains.
I searched for pictures of this flood at Hidden Valley but it was before the days of cell phones so we only had paper photos and they are not well preserved.
