A new scam has made it to our area. Please be mindful and don't respond to these text or emails.
The Police Department has been receiving numerous calls regarding a scam text message circulating that claims individuals have an outstanding traffic violation involving their vehicle in North Dakota.
This message is not legitimate.
The photo being used was originally sent to one of our own officers in an attempt to scam them; however, they did not fall for it.
There are several clear signs this is a scam:
1. The state seal shown is for South Dakota, not North Dakota.
2. The address listed is in Fargo, but the county referenced is incorrect.
3. Grammatical errors are seen in the address provided.
Scammers rely on fear and urgency to get you to act quickly without thinking. Messages like this are designed to sound serious so youโll click links or respond immediately.
Please DO NOT click on any links (including QR Codes) or provide any personal information.
If you receive one of these messages, report it to your local law enforcement agency and, if applicable, the agency being impersonated.
