Here's something most people don't know about Captain's Cove.

Everything you need for LOC Derby week is in one spot right here on the Oak Orchard River. Launch your own boat for $10 from our private gated ramp... your truck and trailer are locked in while you're on the water. Rent one of our boats if you didn't trailer one up. Either way you're steps from the water and steps from everything else.

Bait, tackle, fishing licenses, cold drinks, ATM, rooms, RV hookups... all on site. When you come off the water you don't have to go anywhere. And if you caught something worth talking about, we're an official LOC Derby weigh-in station. Bring your fish here.

The leaderboard is heating up. Current leaders to beat: Scott Schneegas of Mohawk, NY sitting on a 23-pound, 11-ounce king. Charlie Bruning of Gasport leading the brown trout division with a 12-pound, 13-ounce fish. Billie Oxenrider of Spring Glen, PA leading steelhead with an 11-pound, 7-ounce fish.

Kings are running in 200 feet of water right now. Browns tight to shore in 20 to 30 feet. Both right here off the Oak.

Oak Orchard River & Lake Ontario Fishing Report — July 7th, 2026

Captain's Cove is an official LOC Derby weigh-in station. Bring your fish here!!

LOC Derby is into week two and the leaderboard is already stacked. Early grand prize leader... Scott Schneegas of Mohawk, NY with a 23-pound, 11-ounce king. Top brown trout is a 12-pound, 13-ounce fish by Charlie Bruning of Gasport. Plenty of room on that board for someone to knock them off.

Oak Orchard Creek is running at 424 CFS this morning, water temps at 79°F. Fishable.

Out on the Lake the bite is spread out right now... fish anywhere from 70 to 400 feet of water. Spoons, meat rigs and flasher flies are all producing. Browns are plentiful in 40 to 70 feet. Don't be species specific...put a full spread out through the water column and take what the Lake gives you. Kings, cohos, steelhead and lakers all in the mix.

14ft aluminum fishing boat (up to 3 people)... perfect for the river channel and shallow water trolling. Not rated for open lake travel.

Pontoons for larger groups... blue pontoon fits 10, black pontoons fit 12 to 13, red pontoon fits 13. All great for the river and nearshore areas. Half day and full day rates available.

GET OFF THE WATER: Strong thunderstorms are quickly approaching the shoreline from Orleans to Monroe counties. Strong wind, hail & choppy waves are a good bet with these storms. Not the least of which, they're spitting out plenty of lightning. Those swimming need to get out of the water and wait for this to pass.

Oak Orchard River & Lake Ontario Report — July 2nd, 2026

It's America's 250th. Crack a cold one, load the boat, and get out there.

Heat Warning in effect through Friday evening but the weekend looks great. Saturday clears out near 90°F...best day on the water. Sunday low 80s and partly sunny.

Oak Orchard Creek is sitting at 454 CFS, water temps at 74°F. Cleaner and lower than she's been in months.

Out on the Lake it's the Hot Zone right now. Mid-summer kings on Lake Ontario are heavy and aggressive... LOC Summer Derby is in week one, $10,000 grand prize for the biggest salmon. You can still register if you haven't yet.

Oak Orchard River & Lake Ontario Fishing Report: Heat Warning This Week — June 30th, 2026

The heat is crankin' through Friday. If you're fishing this week, fish early morning or evening, and stock up on cold ones before you head out.

Oak Orchard Creek has dropped to 454 CFS... down significantly from where she's been the past few weeks. Water temp is at 74°F. Lower flows mean clearer water and easier wading conditions at the dam, but with this heat, the fish will be doing the smart thing and moving deeper and cooler.

The LOC Summer Derby is in its first week. $140,000 in cash prizes up for grabs through July 26th. Early derby reports are still coming in, but king salmon action off Orleans County has been strong all month. If you're fishing the early morning before the heat sets in, that's your best window.

With heat like this, the Lake is genuinely the better move. Cooler out on the water, and the fish know it too. Stop in before you head out, grab extra water and ice, and we'll point you toward what's working.

Oak Orchard River & Lake Ontario Weekend Preview: Derby Starts Saturday. Rooms Are Going Fast. — June 25th, 2026

The LOC Summer Derby kicks off this Saturday June 27th and runs through July 26th. $140,000 in cash prizes on the line. Kings, cohos, steelhead and lakers all competing. This is the biggest month of fishing on Lake Ontario all year and it starts this weekend right here at the Oak.

The Lake is loaded up. Kings, cohos, steelhead and lakers all showing strong off Orleans County right now. Large spoons and meat rigs in the top 100 feet have been the program. Most productive water has been 100 to 250 feet. Local charters are getting it done out there.

Weather this weekend... Sunday is the pick... mostly sunny, near 76°F.

Here's the honest truth about Derby month. The guys who book a room here don't have to think about driving to the launch at 4am, finding parking, or loading the truck in the dark. They wake up, walk out the door, and they're fishing.

Oak Orchard River & Lake Ontario Fishing Report: LOC Derby Starts Saturday — June 23rd, 2026

Four days.

That's how long until the LOC Summer Derby kicks off on June 27th. $140,000 in cash prizes on the line. Kings, cohos, steelhead and lakers all in the mix right here off Orleans County. If you've been waiting for a reason to get out on Lake Ontario this summer, this is it.

Oak Orchard Creek is running at medium flows with about 2 feet of visibility. Water temps are warm and the turbine channel below the dam is staying clean.

Smallmouth, pike, perch and rock bass are all active in the harbor and lower stretch. Stop in for your bait before you head out.

Out on the Lake the king bite has been strong off Orleans County. Large spoons and meat rigs in the top 100 feet have been the program. Most productive water has been 100 to 250 feet. If you're not running a boat, the piers have been producing a mixed bag of bass and panfish too.

Friday is good but get out early... winds pick up to 20 mph by afternoon. Saturday and Sunday are both clean...light winds, mostly sunny, upper 60s all three days. Best stretch of weather we've had in weeks.

The Oak is running high but the turbine channel below the dam is staying clean. Water temps holding at 78°F. Smallmouth, pike, perch and rock bass are all active down in the harbor and lower stretch. Stop in for your bait and cold drinks then launch right at the deepest hole on the river.

Out on the Lake the king bite off Orleans County is as good as it gets this time of year. Kings, cohos, steelhead and lakers all showing in the catches. Large spoons and meat rigs run in the top 100 feet have been the program.

Oak Orchard River & Lake Ontario Fishing Report — June 16th, 2026

Rain cleared out overnight. Tuesday morning showers wrapped up early...mostly cloudy this afternoon pushing 73°F. Thursday and Friday both mostly sunny near 76°F. Back half of this week is worth planning around.

The Oak is running at 816 CFS with water temps at 78°F. She's high but fishable. The turbine channel below the dam is staying clean. Smallmouth, northern pike, yellow perch and rock bass are all active in the warmer water right now. If you're not heading out on the Lake, work the harbor weedbeds and the lower stretch.

Out on the Lake we're in a classic mid-June transition. Fish are there and they're marking well on sonar. Kings, cohos, steelhead and lakers are stacked between 50 and 90 feet of water. Meat rigs and large mag spoons run 60 to 80 feet down have been getting the best results. The teams that did the work last weekend in the Pro-Am were fishing 70 to 200 feet of water with A-Tom-Mik meat rigs behind 8-inch green glow flashers. That offshore bite hasn't changed. Stop in for your bait.
