It was 95° outside last week, yet half the ® team was sitting in our quarterly meeting wearing hoodies because the conference room was set to Arctic mode.

In order to break the ice, we always kick off quarterly planning with a simple check-in. Each team member shares:

• A personal and business win from the last quarter
• What's working (and what's not)
• What they're most excited about next quarter
• What they hope to get out of the meeting

It only takes 15 minutes, but it completely changes the energy of the room. Before we talk strategy, everyone has a chance to be heard.

What's one thing your team does to kick off planning days? Any non-negotiable rituals worth stealing?

Quick challenge for DSO leaders: Could you pinpoint the exact moment a diagnosed patient slips through the cracks?

If you can't see that leakage happening in real-time, you're essentially trying to manage clinical and operational outcomes while completely blind to the daily friction points that create them. Here's where I break down the three areas I would audit first to figure out where your patients and revenue are walking out the door.

I've spent a lot of time talking about the Diagnosis to Dollars™ gap this year. In this month's Connected Dentistry® newsletter, I explore a major factor that's becoming part of that equation: Your patients and AI.

Not because AI is replacing clinical judgment, but because it's changing what happens between diagnosis and completed care.

If you're leading a practice or DSO, this is an important conversation happening in dentistry today.

This week is all about momentum.

First, the Toothapps team is coming together for quarterly planning to lock in our priorities and map out some major initiatives. Momentum doesn't just happen; you have to build it.

Then, Abby Frey and I are heading to . Some great partnerships and ideas haved sparked from the conversations at these events, and we're ready to keep that momentum going.

If you'll be at Dykema, let's connect.

Patients are using AI. Successful DSOs shouldn't fight it. Here's how your practice can turn AI-informed patients into a competitive advantage.

Next time you present a treatment plan, keep this in mind: your biggest competitor might be ChatGPT.

We talk a lot about AI in the operatory, but patients are already using it at home as a digital second opinion. If they don't fully understand why they need that crown or deep cleaning when they leave your office, they're going to ask AI to analyze it for them.

In this latest episode, I dive into how this shift is creating a silent new form of patient leakage, and what practices and DSOs need to do to fix it.

My ears perked up during the latest "All Things DSO" webinar with Beth Gaddis and Brian Colao. An attendee asked:

"What strategies do you have for positioning DSOs for interoperability in accordance with the 21st Century Cures Act?"

(And no, shockingly enough, I wasn't the one who asked it.)

Brian's response was refreshingly honest. He acknowledged it wasn't an area he'd focused on yet, but said he planned to learn more.

I don't see that as a gap. I see it as a turning point.

For years, interoperability has been viewed as just a "tech problem" for IT departments to figure out. Today, it's becoming a leadership issue. As AI, patient expectations, and care coordination continue to evolve, connected and trusted data won't just support operations. It will become a strategic advantage.

The fact that this question is being asked tells me our industry is moving in the right direction.

Patients don't usually say "no." They say, "I need to think about it"...
then they disappear.

The biggest threat to treatment acceptance isn't rejection, it's inaction caused by an unclear next step.

What reasons do your patients give before they go silent?

A great question I was asked during my most recent webinar:

“What’s the difference between a patient portal and a patient app?”

Here's what I'm seeing:

Web-based patient portals have one way to get a patient's attention: send another email or text message. At a time when patients are flooded with spam, phishing attempts, and news of healthcare data breaches, that's becoming a less effective strategy every day.

A patient app changes the experience:
📱 Secure biometric login instead of another password
🔔 Trusted push notifications instead of emails and texts that get ignored
📂 Direct access to treatment information, appointments, documents, and records from a device patients already use all day
⚡ One-tap access without searching through inboxes or browser bookmarks

The trend is clear. Mobile app use for accessing health information has grown to 57%, while web-only access has dropped to 42%. Meanwhile, 71% of patients say they prefer interacting with healthcare providers on a mobile device.

Convince me I'm wrong: Why should healthcare continue relying on patient web portals, emails, and text messages when patients spend most of their digital lives in apps?
