Is your boat a little slower getting on plane than it was in the spring? 👇
It might not be the engine. It might be your pump.
Every river trip runs tons of water through your jet, and some of it carries sand, silt, and gravel. Over a season, that wears down the two parts that make your thrust:
🔹 Impeller: The blades get nicked, rounded, or bent.
🔹 Wear ring: The gap around the impeller opens up, so water slips back instead of pushing you forward.
Signs your pump needs attention:
✔️ Slower hole shot, especially when loaded
✔️ Lower top speed at the same RPM
✔️ Engine working harder to hold the same speed
✔️ Cavitation in turns
✔️ New vibration or noise
If it came on gradually, it’s usually wear. If it came on suddenly, check the intake grate for debris first.
With the season winding down, now’s the time to inspect the impeller, check the wear ring clearance, and drain the pump completely before it freezes.
