A workforce analysis reported by Repairer Driven News in October 2026 found that the U.S. automotive body repair workforce included around 149,000 workers. About 29% were 55 or older, while only 11% were under 25.
The same analysis reported a five-year retention rate of 65% and median annual pay of $54,000 for automotive body repairers. These figures suggest that the industry must both attract younger entrants and keep trained workers from leaving.
Experienced technicians carry years of practical knowledge about diagnosing damage, selecting repair methods, and working safely. When they retire, shops need younger employees who have had enough training and hands-on experience to take over.
Are repair shops and trade schools doing enough to bring younger workers into the industry before experienced technicians retire?
