Health officials are investigating three laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in Yuma County. Two of the cases have been linked to recent travel, while the source of the third case is still under investigation. Additional cases are possible because symptoms can appear anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks after a person is infected with the parasite.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness that can cause cramping, nausea, vomiting, and prolonged watery diarrhea. People can become infected by eating contaminated fresh produce, drinking contaminated water, or using contaminated water to wash fruits and vegetables. Health officials also note that the parasite is resistant to chlorine, so parents should closely supervise young children when they're playing in pools and splash pads.

Diana Gomez, Chief Health Officer with the Yuma County Public Health Services District shared: “We want to remind the public to please be aware of the symptoms. Early detection is important, particularly for young children and the elderly. Symptoms may be more severe in these populations and can quickly lead to dehydration or other complications.”
