This has happened to me multiple times.

The service department calls with genuine concern:

“Your cabin air filter is very dirty. We recommend replacing it.”

My actual response:

“Just go beat it against the building. I replaced it last month.”

There is usually a brief pause, as if I just violated some sacred dealership tradition.

I don’t mind paying a professional for skilled work. A good mechanic can save you money, frustration and an entire Saturday.

But $105 for a $14 filter that takes a few minutes to replace is already a healthy markup. Trying to replace one that is only a month old is how you make customers question every other recommendation.

That is the real cost of the upsell.

The next repair might be completely legitimate, but now I’m wondering whether it also just needs to be beaten against the building.

Established in 2026 Mobile Auto Pros was born out of a rejection of corporate greed and the neglectful, scammy treatment so many hardworking people face in the automotive industry. After being laid off and underappreciated by a corporate system driven entirely by bottom lines, I decided to take control of my work and put people first. I started this business to work directly for myself and the community. We offer cost-effective, transparent pricing and extraordinary customer service, ensuring every person is treated like a human being—never just a number or a dollar sign. When you choose Mobile Auto Pros, you're getting honest, reliable, and respectful mobile mechanic work from someone who genuinely cares about keeping you safely on the road.
