As USVs become more autonomous, one requirement isn’t changing: reliability.

For platforms operating with high duty cycles, long loiter times and limited human intervention, propulsion needs to be predictable, repeatable, and easy to service.

That’s where still has a critical role to play.

When combined with open integration, enabling clean data exchange with autonomy stacks, vessel control systems and payloads, it becomes a mission enabler.

In next-generation USV operations, it’s not just about autonomy advancing, it’s about choosing propulsion that can keep up.

built for a marine-first environment, open interoperability, and diesel performance.

Sea trials of Sea Archer – the Australian-built uncrewed surface vessel (USV) – mark an important milestone in the evolution of autonomous maritime systems.

Developed by Leidos Australia the platform demonstrates what can be achieved through innovation, collaboration and advanced autonomous marine propulsion. Cox Marine propulsion plays a key role, with twin 300 V8 diesel outboards delivering the reliability, efficiency and endurance required for mission-critical operations, supplied by Power Equipment Pty Ltd.

With a range of up to 1,500 nautical miles, Sea Archer has been engineered for persistence and adaptability, supporting operations from surveillance and logistics resupply to more complex and evolving mission profiles.

The project also highlights the importance of strong regional partnerships, combining global engineering expertise with local knowledge to deliver robust, supportable solutions fit for purpose.

Meet James Eatwell, Chief Technical Officer at Cox Marine.

James has been part of the Cox Marine journey for over a decade, turning a lifelong passion for engines into industry-leading innovation. Drawn by the opportunity to work on something truly different, James recognised early on that Cox Marine wasn’t just building another engine, instead pioneering a completely new approach from a clean sheet.

Hugh Hudleston is at ⚓🇫🇷 NAVEXPO 2026, supporting valued distributor partner LB Tender Mechanics. Some great discussions taking place on diesel outboard innovation. Built for demanding maritime operations, Cox Marine’s propulsion alternative delivers the reliability, fuel efficiency and durability trusted by defence and commercial operators worldwide.

As defence, government, and commercial operators accelerate their adoption of USVs, one factor has quickly become clear, and that is propulsion can no longer be treated as a standalone component.

In modern maritime programmes, particularly those driven by autonomy, success hinges not just on engine performance, but on how seamlessly the propulsion system integrates into the wider platform. Stephen Pitt explains.

Today we recognise U.S. Memorial Day, taking time to remember those who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. armed forces. With long‑standing connections across the United States and active work within the defence sector, this day is an important moment to pause and reflect, alongside our partners, customers and colleagues in the region and around the world.

On International Women in Maritime Day, we’re proud to recognise the women who help drive Cox Marine forward, across leadership, engineering, production and operations.

Today is an opportunity to celebrate their contribution, and reaffirm our commitment to creating an industry where talent and ambition can thrive at every level.

It was a pleasure to welcome our South Korean distributor, SoungJin Marine, to the Cox Marine facility in Shoreham-by-Sea, UK.

During the visit, Hugh Hudleston heard first-hand feedback from the market, particularly around the performance of our V8 300HP diesel outboards in heavily loaded commercial applications such as seaweed harvesting vessels.

Fuel economy continues to be a standout benefit. While Cox Marine typically cites around 30% fuel efficiency improvements versus petrol outboards, operators in South Korea are seeing up to 50% improvements in real-world conditions.

The reason? Diesel engines working less hard at heavy payloads, delivering the same performance with significantly lower fuel consumption.

It’s great to see the reliability and efficiency of our propulsion alternative delivering tangible value for commercial operators on the water.
