This Government is looking at getting involved in motorcycling.
A consultation has been launched which wants to know how folk feel about possible changes to the way in which people first gain their CBT certificates, through to training or testing to upgrade from a smaller bike (A1/A2) to a full licence.
The biggest proposals are aimed at CBT which was introduced in 1990 and has seen little change since. It wants to prevent riders from continually riding on a provisional licence and not making the move to improved riding knowledge, skills and safety by taking a full licence. Consultation will look at whether there should be a restriction on the number of times you can take a CBT.
Further proposed changes are to bring in a theory and hazard perception test, to raise levels of understanding of the road to that of other road users. Riders may also no longer be able to switch from automatic to geared bikes too – if you took the CBT on an automatic you’d need to redo it or take further training before being allowed a geared CBT certificate. It looks as though a CBT certificate may be revoked if you get 6 penalty points on your license too.
Riders of A1/A2 licences who want to upgrade may get the opportunity to do so with a choice of either sticking with taking a test on a bigger bike or a proposed introduction of further training over a certain period of time.
Changes to the way we as instructors are qualified is likely as well.
All the proposed changes would need significant changes to the administrative side of things with a switch to more electronic learning and digital records resulting in less paperwork.
The consultation opened on January 7 and closes on 31st March. To read the consultation in full follow the link – and then decide if you want to give your views
