How early should you indicate before turning? Your signal needs to give other road users enough warning to understand what you’re about to do. In this mock driving test, the student indicates right at the last second before turning, earning a markdown for signalling too late.

Simply switching on your indicator isn’t enough if other drivers have almost no time to respond. Drivers behind you need to understand why you’re slowing down and where you intend to go.

Look ahead for your turn, check your mirrors and signal early enough to make your intention clear before starting the turn. Plan the timing around the road layout, including nearby side roads and driveways, so your signal doesn’t suggest you’re turning somewhere else.

Good indicator timing is part of preparing for the turn. Practise combining your observations, signal, positioning and speed adjustment into a smooth sequence instead of leaving everything until the last moment.

Watch the student’s signal and consider how much warning it gives the driver behind.

Is this a one-way road or a two-way road? A central divider, sometimes planted with trees, can make the road layout confusing. Traffic on your side travels in one direction, while oncoming vehicles use the other side of the divider.

When you approach the KEEP LEFT sign at the beginning of the island, pass to its left and follow the correct path along your side of the divider. This side is a ONE WAY road.

Pay particular attention to where the island ends. Beyond that point, opposing traffic may share the same undivided roadway again. Follow the road markings and keep to the left of the centre so you maintain a safe position.

Look ahead rather than judging the road only by the section immediately beside your car. Identifying the beginning and end of the divider helps you understand where oncoming traffic belongs and where you need to drive.

This video explains how to read the layout and avoid confusing a divided road with a one-way street.

What does a good start to a driving test look like? This student demonstrates careful observation from the moment he moves off, then handles a T-intersection with no road markings calmly and confidently.

Before leaving the side of the road, he completes MIS to the right: Mirrors, Indicator and Shoulder check. He checks the surrounding traffic, signals his intention and checks his blind spot before moving off safely.

At the T-intersection, he slows down, checks for traffic and turns when it’s safe. Even without painted lines, he recognises the intersection and takes the time to assess the situation before proceeding.
These first moments show the value of preparing before each movement.

Complete your observations before moving off, then look ahead so you can recognise the next situation and adjust your speed early. Keep your movements smooth and your speed controlled, giving yourself time to make safe decisions.

If you’re preparing for your driving test, watch the student’s sequence of checks and how he approaches the intersection. It’s a useful example of putting familiar skills together into a confident start.

Pulling over might seem straightforward, but it still requires careful positioning and control. During Luke’s mock driving test, he gets too close to the kerb while pulling over. I have to intervene at the last second to prevent him from hitting it, making this a critical driving error.

When pulling over, choose a suitable place, complete your observations and signal before moving towards the side of the road. Reduce your speed smoothly and approach the kerb gradually so you have time to judge the gap and straighten the car.

Avoid steering sharply towards the kerb or carrying too much speed into the final part of the manoeuvre. Keep checking your position as you bring the car to a controlled stop, leaving suitable clearance.

In Luke’s case, the examiner prevents contact with the kerb, but that doesn’t erase the mistake. The intervention was needed to stop the manoeuvre from becoming unsafe.

Watch how quickly a routine pull-over can go wrong when the car gets too close to the edge of the road.

Can you be in the correct turning lane and still receive a markdown? Luke is in a dedicated right-turn lane, but his car is positioned too close to the left side of that lane. In this mock driving test, his positioning earns him a minor mark.

For the situation shown, Luke needs to keep his car more centrally positioned within the right-turn lane. Selecting the correct lane is only part of preparing for the turn. You also need to maintain a suitable position inside it.
Look ahead along the lane and use both boundaries to judge where your car sits.

Avoid focusing only on one line, which can make it harder to judge your overall position. Make small, smooth steering adjustments when needed, while staying aware of surrounding traffic.

This example highlights a detail worth practising before your driving test: entering the right lane, settling into a central position and maintaining that position as you approach the turn.

Can failing to stay in the middle of your lane lead to a driving test fail? This video highlights the importance of lane positioning and keeping your car on a safe, controlled path.

The aim is generally to stay centred within your lane, while adjusting your position when necessary for parked vehicles, hazards or the road layout. Being slightly off-centre doesn’t automatically mean a fail. What matters is whether your positioning creates danger or shows a serious loss of control.

To improve your lane position, look well ahead along your intended path rather than staring at the road immediately in front of the bonnet. Use the lane boundaries to judge where your whole car sits, and make small, smooth steering adjustments instead of sudden corrections.

Practise recognising a safe position from the driver’s seat with your instructor. Maintaining suitable clearance on both sides helps you avoid drifting towards nearby traffic, parked cars or the kerb.
