How to Spot Early Signs of Transmission Trouble in Your Truck

Your truck’s transmission is essential for shifting gears and handling heavy loads, but it is also one of the costliest components to repair. Catching transmission issues early can save you time and money.
If you hear grinding, whining, or clunking sounds when shifting gears, it could be a sign of a transmission problem. While these noises might start small, ignoring them can lead to serious damage.

A healthy transmission should shift smoothly. If you notice hesitation when you shift or feel the gears slipping out of place, it is time to get it checked. Slipping gears can make it difficult to control your truck and may put you in a dangerous situation on the road.
A burning odour is a red flag that something is overheating, possibly your transmission fluid. When transmission fluid breaks down, it cannot properly cool the system, leading to friction and potential damage. If you smell burning, check the fluid level or head to a mechanic.
Transmission fluid is essential for lubrication and cooling. If you notice reddish or brown fluid spots under your truck, it could mean you have a leak. Check your fluid levels regularly and top them up if necessary, but do not ignore any visible leaks.
Modern trucks often have warning lights to alert you to potential issues. If your transmission warning light comes on, do not wait—get it inspected as soon as possible to prevent costly repairs down the road.

Keeping an eye out for these warning signs can help you avoid transmission trouble and keep your truck running smoothly. Regular checks and early action will save you from costly repairs and unwanted downtime.

Tuck Focus: P-series

The P-series is one of Scania’s offerings in a fleet of quality vehicles, presenting a well-balanced cab optimised for urban and regional transport.

This truck offers a low weight cab with optimal visibility and driveability that is well-balanced, perfectly suiting your needs. One of Scania’s more versatile ranges, it is ideal for urban and regional operations, including construction and other demanding conditions.

Its optimal visibility and driveability improves both safety and the feeling of control. The P-cab offers easy cab access, a quiet working environment and improved space and storage. In terms of comfort, the cab suspension has been designed to reduce vibrations, allowing you to work in peace.

The optional city safe window low down on the passenger door improves visibility and safety, as it allows the driver to detect possible obstructions or hazards. In addition, the driver seat positioning, lowered seat positioning, lowered side window and larger glass surface offers even greater visibility.

With the 7-litre engine compact format allowing the engine tunnel to be a whole 95 mm lower, the P-series offers more space in the cab area than a regular P-cab. This improves cross-cab access and allows the opportunity for faster exits through the passenger door.

The P-series has been designed to achieve the lowest possible air drag, with the shape of the cab designed to be more streamlined and achieve efficient air flow. As part of the basic configuration, position lights and extra lights are now integrated into the cab without impacting the aerodynamics.

The Scania P-series offers comfort and versatility with its cab range and multitude of urban and regional operations. Used in construction or for other demanding operations, you are ensured to drive in comfort and with clear visibility.

Why regular oil changes matter.

When you see the oil that pumps through your truck’s engine as blood pumping through a heart, you will realise the importance of regularly changing it and providing your engine with quality oil.

Engine oil plays a vital part in lubricating the moving parts of your truck, as well as preventing excessive wear and tear. It also acts as a coolant, dissipating heat generated by your engine’s continuous combustion process. Engine oil also cleans any dirt and debris, as well as contaminants within the engine, preventing them from causing damage.

Changing out your oil regularly is highly advisable, as it will ensure your oil continues to fulfil its vital roles on your engine. Oil can deteriorate over time, losing its effectiveness and making it less capable of cleaning, lubricating and cooling your engine. Contaminants also build up in your oil and if left unchecked, can cause significant damage. To ensure engine longevity and performance, changing your oil should be one of your first steps as it will increase your performance, reduce wear and tear, prevent costly repairs and replacements, and provide you with more power for long hauls.

When you decide to conduct and oil change, ensure you approach a professional to do this, as they will deliver a quality service and inspection of your engine and filters. It is important to replace your oil with that of a higher quality to prevent costly repairs and issues in the future.

If you require the assistance of a professional truck mechanic for any oil changes or repairs, contact Truck On Roodt today on 072 526 5575.

Truck Driver Safety

Maintaining safety on the roads as a driver or fleet owner should be a primary concern, despite a rush to meet deadlines and deliveries. Drivers share the roads with others and must recognise their responsibility in maintaining a safe environment as they travel. By doing your part to improve the safety of your drivers and those around them, you not only ensure their protection but also reduce costs associated with accidents and claims.

Encourage your drivers to practice defensive driving. This entails always being alert to potential hazards and changes in driving and road conditions. Teach them to anticipate potentially dangerous situations and make safe, well-informed decisions to curb them. Drivers can practice defensive driving by watching out for blind spots, using the three-second rule (allowing for three seconds follow time between cars), always using their indicators and obeying the speed limit.

As a fleet owner or manager, you can implement preventative maintenance schedules to keep your drivers safe and your vehicles in a running condition. This will prevent potential hazards from arising, costly repairs and time-consuming downtime. A preventative checklist can aid you in identifying potential risks or areas that require improvement. In addition, post-trip inspections can also aid you in assessing any potential hazards that may have developed during the trip.

Consider investing in a real-time GPS tracker to keep track of your fleet vehicles. This will allow you to monitor if your driver encounters any problems or breakdowns during their journey. Knowing the precise location saves precious time and potential costs that could go towards saving or aiding your driver.

There are various ways to ensure the safety of your driver and those around them. Ensure you discuss safety protocols and strategies with your drivers to prevent costly and hazardous situations.

In the event that you face any mechanical issues, trust Truck On Roodt to get you back on the road. Contact us today on 072 526 5575.

The benefits of fleet maintenance:

Ensuring your fleet is in tip-top shape through regular maintenance is an essential part of business operations as you rely on vehicles that run efficiently and smoothly. In this post we will discuss the benefits of fleet maintenance and why you should consider routinely inspecting your vehicles.

One of the most significant impacts to your business operations is downtime. By implementing regular maintenance, you will address potential issues before they escalate into major problems. This curbs unexpected breakdowns that could result in increased downtime.

Proper maintenance also extends the lifespan of your vehicles. Regular inspections, oil changes, and component replacements will contribute to the longevity of your vehicle.

Your vehicles share the roads with other drives, so brake failures, dysfunctional tyres and unresponsive steering could lead to safety hazards. By inspecting these regularly and addressing any potential signs of wear and tear, you will ensure the safety of your driver and those around them.

Regular maintenance and addressing issues affecting the fuel systems, enhances fuel efficiency. Fuel-efficient vehicles not only reduce operational costs, but also contribute to a smaller carbon footprint.

One of the more persuasive benefits is cost-effectiveness. By implementing regular maintenance strategies, you will be able to curb more significant issues from arising, preventing costly repairs.

When you implement regular maintenance, you ensure your chances of complying with regulatory standards, such as safety and environmental regulations, which are critical to business operating fleets. This also reduces your risk of receiving fines and penalties.

Well-maintained fleets also possess a higher resale value. When you decide to upgrade or replace your fleet, having vehicles that have been well-looked after, can result in better returns and help in the costs of acquiring new vehicles.

The benefits of regular maintenance are clear and substantial. By implementing the appropriate strategies to avoid costly and time-consuming repairs, you will also secure benefits for your fleet in the future.

Signs your truck needs maintenance

As a driver or fleet owner, your truck spends many kilometres on the road, often hauling sizeable cargo. Knowing when your truck needs urgent maintenance will not only save you costs in the long-term but will prevent a costly and time-consuming breakdown.

Your most obvious and significant indicator will be in the form of a warning light on your dashboard. This may seem self-explanatory, but whenever a warning light flashes, take care of the issue as soon as possible. If left unattended, the issue may worsen and lead to a larger problem.

As soon as you start to notice your truck leaking fluids, book it in for a service. This could indicate a break in the hose. It is also crucial to identify what fluids are leaking, as this may differentiate how severe your problem is.

If you begin to experience issues with braking, ensure you visit a mechanic immediately. Brake failures can indicate a serious problem and could create a hazard for both you and those you share the road with. If you hear any strange noises from your brakes, feel vibrations, or pull to one side when braking, ensure you service your truck.

Engine noises can also indicate a serious problem. Knocking sounds can often indicate worn bearings and if those are not replaced, engine failure will soon follow. It is vital that you service your truck in this instance.

Whether you experience brake issues, warning lights, or engine noises, ensure you consult your mechanic on all related issues before they become costly problems.

Truck Focus: Scania R-Series

Scania is a well-known name in the trucking industry, with a proven track record of providing quality vehicles for fleet owners and businesses. In this post we will focus on the R-series of Scania trucks and briefly touch on the specifications the series provides.

Scania describes their R-series as a “strong, athletic and dynamic” range of trucks with a “premium workhorse” title. It can be described as a luxurious vehicle but with the toughness to back up its title as a persistent and versatile workhorse.

Comfort is key with the R-series with its adjustable driver’s seat and equally comfortable passenger seat, with the option of rotating and reclining the passenger seat as well.

Drive in style with the distinct Scania shape, from the windows right down to the dashboard controls and ventilation dampers. The interior represents classic Scania style with matched colours, materials and finishes.

Long-hauls require adequate rest and that is exactly what the R-cab provides with its extendable table, refrigerator and a rotating and reclining passenger seat.

Lighting is an important safety feature and, on the R-series, the position lights and extra lights are now integrated into the cab, without compromising on aerodynamics.

Scania engines are known for fuel efficiency and the R-series can be fitted with a 9-litre, 13-litre, super 13-litre or 16-litre engine, all compatible with diesel and alternative fuels.

The Scania R-series blends athleticism, luxury and strength with its variety of engine choices to deliver a versatile truck that will suit any long-hauling need.

A quick look at maintenance checklists

Keeping your vehicle running depends greatly on whether you follow maintenance checklists before each journey. By implementing set checklists each time, you will save on running costs and time. Let us take a quick look at some maintenance checklists and how you can implement them.

A preventative checklist is performed prior to your journey to identify potential problems that may arise and put measures in place to prevent them. The checklist includes the manufacturers recommendations on vehicle maintenance and the approximate time when a vehicle should be serviced. These steps include oil changes, filter changes, tuning the engine, checking the brakes, and checking the lubrication, to name a few.

A demand maintenance checklist is only performed when needed. This includes replacing or fixing any components when they break down, or after an independent inspection points out any wear and tear. This includes replacing lightbulbs, retuning springs, replacing windows, replacing batteries, and checking the engine and transmission, to name a few.

A crisis maintenance checklist is performed only if a preventative and demand checklist are both ignored and a crisis occurs. This results in a breakdown due to sudden failure, requiring a replacement vehicle to continue. This checklist will focus on identifying and addressing urgent and critical maintenance tasks required during a crisis, like immediate repairs to ensure safety, restoring functionality and reducing the risk of further damage. Crisis maintenance may incur additional costs.

By implementing detailed maintenance records and ensuring you follow the above maintenance checklists, your operations will run smoothly and the risk of downtime and incurred costs will be lower.

Trucker myths debunked

Truckers and the transport industry form a major part of our economy, and truckers are the silent heroes of an entire nation, moving quietly during the day and night, transporting our goods across borders with great effort and urgency. Unfortunately, truckers and their industry are met with scrutiny and many myths surround their day-to-day lives. In this post we will debunk some of these myths and hopefully shine some light on these transport heroes and their efforts.

During this Women’s Month we learned that although the transport industry is still predominantly male, many female drivers have broken through gender barriers and taken it upon themselves to enter the industry. So, the myth of trucking being a male-exclusive industry is slowly changing into a false statement.

The second myth purports that trucking is an easy job and anyone can do it, after all, most people drive cars, so driving a truck cannot be too dissimilar. Truck driving requires special skills, qualifications and training, which not anyone can obtain. Truck driving also becomes a lifestyle, which may not suit everyone.

This leads us to the next myth that trucking’s isolated nature will be wonderful to anyone who enjoys being alone. This may be the case for some, but being isolated for long periods of time, with no human contact can take its toll on a driver. That is why many drivers opt for video calls or forums to find some form of communication with others.

Some have argued that the braking distance for trucks is the same as a car, which is a very dangerous way of thinking, especially when travelling. The braking distance of a truck varies significantly from a car due to several factors, like: the weight of the truck and whether it is loaded or unloaded, ultimately affecting its force to slow down or come to a stop; and the mechanics of the truck, such as its robust axles and brake components which are made for a heavy-duty vehicle, affecting the response time for larger braking distances.

Trucking takes on a feminine twist: Part 2

This Women’s Month we are celebrating the fearless female truckers and fleet owners who challenge gender stereotypes and bring hope, education and their own unique attributes to the trucking and transport industry. In this post we will discuss some corporations and organisations offering women in trucking the much-needed resources to further their careers in the industry.

The Commercial Transport Academy, in collaboration with Women In Trucking Africa, offer courses to women in trucking, logistics and transport to equip them with the necessary skills in order to facilitate them with entrepreneurial ventures. The programs also offer career placements, funding and business development. The CTA also collaborates with UD Trucks South Africa, to further their Ultimate Women Program, a development program focusing on training, educating and uplifting women in the transport industry. The program is a testament to the company’s commitment to actively partake in socio-economic transformation that bridges gender gaps.

The Women Inspiring Women to Lead in Transport initiative, in partnership with the CTA and Hollard Insurance, aims to empower women in the trucking and logistics industry, one they believe reflects the least female representation. The program not only trains women in terms of physical skills, but also equips them with the knowledge surrounding personal budgeting, gender-based violence, HIV and Aids, and harassment in the workplace. In addition, women also learn the relevant business skills to aid them in accessing the market network. The initiative has been launched in Gauteng and Cape Town since 2022 and has been supported by the Volvo Group (through their Iron Women Group program) and Onelogix-Trucklogix.

By engaging both the private sector and organisations with training and education in mind, gender barriers and stereotypes can be bridged, allowing more women to enter the transport and logistics industry. The inclusion of female drivers and owners opens a new market and skilled labour force, but also transforms society and an industry for the better.

Trucking takes on a feminine twist: Part 1

The once male dominated world of trucking and fleet logistics has opened its doors to women, proving they are thriving members of the industry, despite societal norms and stereotypes.

Historically, gendered roles, particularly involving certain careers have kept the genders separate when it comes to the workplace. Trucking is one prime example of this, but things are changing with more women being exposed to the industry and choosing to make a living for themselves as truckers or fleet owners. This once male-dominated industry is now more open in embracing women into new roles, with some organisations like the Commercial Transport Academy and Women In Trucking Africa collaborating to educate women and uplift women into their new transport roles.

Women’s contribution to the trucking industry began as far back as World War II in the US where women stepped up to fill in for men who were at war. In fact, in 1918 Luella Bates pioneered the trucking industry as the first female truck driver when she shattered gender stereotypes as a truck driver during World War I. Thereafter, Lillie Elizabeth Drennan in Texas became the first licensed truck driver and trucking firm owner in 1929.

Africa hosts its own homegrown female trucking heroes who have broken through gendered barriers. One such pioneering woman is Siphokazi Matsha, the founder and chief executive of GoGirl Logistics, a South African, 100% black and female owned logistics and courier company. Matsha wishes to empower women through training, hiring and leadership in the transport and fleet sector. Felicia Marfo owns Ladybird, Ghana’s first female-only logistics firm, going a step further by empowering her female employees by training them to become gobally certified truck drivers. Her wish is to allow women to empower themselves as this aids economies and increases growth.
