There are motorcycles that make sense.

And then there are motorcycles that make you open Google Maps on a Thursday afternoon at work and start looking for excuses.
The Ducati Multistrada V2 falls firmly into the second category.

Fast enough to make mountain passes addictive. Comfortable enough to disappear for a weekend. Good enough to turn a simple coffee run into a 400 km detour.

Pair it with a Turkana Duffalo 25L duffel waterproof wide-mouth roll-top bag and you’ve got all the soft luggage most motorcycle riders actually need. A change of clothes, camera gear, rain layer, toothbrush and just enough space left for the bad decisions that usually turn into the best stories.

Most motorcycles don’t need a full luggage system, but they do need somewhere to carry the handful of things you use on almost every ride.

There seems to be a belief that motorcycle luggage comes in only two options: nothing at all or enough storage to relocate your entire life to another continent.

A day to remember 🔥
Woke up today to birds and morning light in my tent. Then a stop at an abandoned airbase with an old plane wreck — a place with history.
Consequently, we were really challenged on the tracks... technical pieces, mud and gravel. And in between a refreshing splash in an ice-cold river.
This is exactly why I love these kinds of adventures. Beautiful routes, good people and small moments that make up the day.

One of the things I love about modular luggage is that people always find uses we never originally designed it for.

Take the GeckoGrip harness. Most riders know it as a tank bag or tail pack harness. But throw the large version over a Duffalo or TurtleTrunk and suddenly it becomes a beaver tail.

Now you’ve got a secure outer layer for jackets, wet gear, sandals, firewood, snacks, or whatever random collection of nonsense you’ve accumulated during the day. Better still, the MOLLE panel lets you add 3L, 5L or 10L TrekBags on top for extra quick-access storage.

Need more space for a trip? Add a pouch.

Don’t need it? Take it off chop-chop with the quick release buckles.
Need it on a different bike tomorrow? Move it.

There is no “correct” setup. That’s the whole point.

Everyone packs differently. Everyone travels differently. The best luggage system is the one that adapts to your trip, not the other way around.

It’s probably not the prettiest solution according to the internet luggage experts. Fortunately, those oke’s are usually still arguing about luggage on Facebook while you’re halfway to the next town.

A few days ago Darryl bumped into Craig Luke in Radium, Canada, and found him doing exactly what Craig does best… pointing the front wheel at the horizon and seeing what happens next.

Craig is currently tackling the legendary Trans-Canada Adventure Trail, a route stretching thousands of kilometres across Canada, much of it on gravel, dirt, forestry roads and remote backcountry tracks. It’s not a guided tour. It’s not a group ride. It’s you, your bike, your decisions and whatever the trail decides to throw at you. And he is doing his best to do it on 50$ a day... yes a tall order.

Craig is out there proving that adventure riding has absolutely nothing to do with age and everything to do with attitude.

His KOVE450 is carrying a well-used set of Turkana luggage that has already seen its fair share of dust, mud, crashes, rain and questionable route choices. The TrekBags, Oxpacker and other gear strapped to the bike aren’t there to look pretty. They’re there because they work. Day after day. Mile after mile.

That’s something we’ve always loved about the people who use our gear.

Turkana has never really been about celebrity riders, glossy marketing campaigns or chasing internet fame. We’d rather be known around campfires than viral videos on social media. Truth be told, we’re not all that interested in becoming famous. We’d rather build gear for people like Craig.

The Turkana Gear GeckoGrip™ is a bit of an oddball adventure motorcycle tankbag in our range because it started life as a tank bag harness. But over the years it has proven to be far more useful than that. Sure, it works brilliantly with a BullFrog™ 5L tank bag or one of our TrekBags™, but that is really just where the story starts.

One of the things that always puzzled us about motorcycle luggage is how much of it is built around a specific bike or a very specific purpose. Then a few years later you buy another motorcycle and suddenly half your luggage collection no longer fits, needs new brackets, or ends up gathering dust on a shelf in the garage.

We wanted something a little more adaptable. Something that could survive years of use, multiple motorcycles and different types of riding without becoming obsolete every time a new bike followed you home.
And be modular so you can strap nearly anything to it, even your favourite teddy bear or mascot.

That is why we designed the large and small GeckoGrip™ harnesses. A rider might use a small 3L-5LTrekBag™ for a quick breakfast run and a bit of gravel exploration. If the ride changes, the luggage changes with it. If the motorcycle changes, the GeckoGrip™ simply moves across and carries on doing its job.

What we particularly like is how simple the system remains despite being so versatile. Pair it with a TrekBag™ and you’ve got a waterproof roll-top setup with no zips to jam, no sliders to wear out and no dust-clogged nonsense waiting to ruin your day halfway through a trip.

“Just a quick 10 day ride”

Somewhere between Van Zyl’s Pass, Marienfluss in Namibia and a seemingly endless pile of loose rocks, that statement aged rather quickly.

These photos captures those moments every seasoned moto adventure rider knows. Not a breakdown or a crash. Just a brief pause to study the terrain ahead, catch your breath and appreciate exactly where you are.

And where you are matters. Kaokoland and the Marienfluss are among the most remote places in Southern Africa. There are no recovery vehicles around the corner, no motorcycle workshops down the road and often no cellphone signal. When something goes wrong out here, you’re largely on your own.

That’s why adventure riding in places like this is never just about the motorcycle. It’s about preparation, self-sufficiency and carrying equipment you can trust when help may be days away.

The bikes weren’t overloaded with gear. Just the essentials needed to be comfortable, self-reliant and ready for whatever Namibia decided to throw at us next.

Because out here, the challenge isn’t simply riding the road.
