Tennessee Williams gave his play “A streetcar named Desire” the name based on the tram route in New Orleans which served the French Quarter until 1948. My good friend Pierre, the gentleman farmer on whose farm in the Anysberg area we on occasion test bakkies, recently bought a hybrid HiLux; having driven an Amarok for a quarter million km. Mahindra just keeps on polishing and fine tuning their designs. Clearly they are listening to us. And so the new seven-seater SUV, the AX7 is a car that suits our market and will satisfy most buyers who look beyond a badge. I really enjoyed having the AX7 on my driveway. It is small enough to fit a typical garage or parking bay yet big enough for a family of five to go on holiday....

Suzuki is on a roll with new product launches and last month was the turn of their AB sedan segment marker leader, the Dzire, which is India's best selling sedan. After 11 years on our market we are getting a new body, new engine, new platform – the new Dzire sub-compact from Suzuki is geared up to obliterate the opposition. Not only is the pricing really sharp, but specification on the GL+ is excellent and in addition rear leg room is good and the boot is big, for the AB segment of the market....

I had the pleasure to drive a real, basic no-frills workhorse bakkie recently. What a joy to drive a simple, well engineered practical purpose-built vehicle. The base or XL badged Ranger diesel is just such a truck. Not just value for money but plain good value. The bakkie we tested is the double cab 6-speed manual transmission 2.0 L turbodiesel which produces power of 125 kW but crucially, 405 Nm of torque....

The little base GL Suzuki Swift model is not a fancy car, neither is it actually so little, and most definitely not a high performance car, but it covers all the bases. All the basic comfort and convenience features and safety tech is built in, is easy to use and works as required. The GL+ and GLX models take things to a whole other level, but for a basic mobility appliance I don't think you can beat the GL Swift which has adequate performance and good fuel consumption across the range....

Remember the advertising jingle, “braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet” from the heydays of GMSA in the seventies and which made a comeback in 2009? Sadly in 2017 the brand was phased out and GM exited our market for a second time. Other American brands we no longer see are Chrysler, Dodge and AMC's Rambler for exampleleaving behind only memories of their heyday....
