Culture: Why belonging has become business-critical
By Andrew Velleman, CEO of CFAO South Africa

Hiring a new colleague is an exciting opportunity to bring fresh energy, innovative ideas and new capabilities into the organisation. While finding top talent is seldom a quick process, it remains a worthwhile investment. Organisations dedicate significant time to identifying individuals who not only possess the right skills but also resonate with their values and long-term vision.
Despite this careful approach, many businesses face a common challenge: talented people often don’t stay as long as expected. The key reason frequently extends beyond remuneration or workload; it’s about cultivating a genuine sense of belonging.

The way colleagues evaluate organisations has changed. Colleagues still expect competitive remuneration and opportunities for growth, but they are also looking for workplaces where they are respected, where leadership is visible, and where they can see how their contribution matters.
For younger generations entering and shaping the workforce, this has become even more pronounced. Belonging is no longer viewed as a “nice to have”. It increasingly influences where people choose to work, whether they remain with an organisation, and how committed they are once they are there.

For business leaders, this changes the conversation around culture. Culture can no longer be seen as an internal initiative that sits alongside the business strategy. It directly affects an organisation’s ability to retain skills, strengthen engagement, build resilience and adapt to change.

At CFAO South Africa, we have seen that colleagues stay where they can see a future for themselves. They stay where leaders are present and accessible, where development opportunities are tangible, and where individuals feel trusted and empowered to contribute.

This thinking continues to shape how we invest across our businesses. Leadership development, colleague engagement initiatives, wellness programmes and career pathways are not standalone activities. They form part of building an organisation that can sustain performance over the long term.
Strong cultures are not built through policies alone. They are built through everyday experiences: how leaders engage, how teams support one another, and whether people feel recognised for what they bring.

People may join organisations for opportunities, but they often stay because of the environment they encounter once they arrive. In an increasingly competitive market, culture has become more than a consideration, it is a business imperative.

This Youth Month, CFAO South Africa is proud to highlight the impact of Hertz Rent a Car, a division of , CFAO Mobility SA, as they stand alongside Footprints 4 Sam to bring hope to families who need it most.

Launched on 1 June 2026, a new 22-seater Super Sam Hero Vehicle has taken to the roads of Johannesburg - helping children with serious medical conditions reach their hospital and clinic appointments safely and on time.

For many families, this is more than transport. It means relief, dignity and the knowledge that their child can travel comfortably with the support they need, including space for essential medical equipment such as oxygen.

By supporting the vehicle’s fuel and maintenance, Hertz helps keep this vital service running — ensuring it continues to reach families when they need it most.

Together, we are helping to turn Sam’s legacy into something powerful: access, care, and hope for every journey ahead.

Why Investing in Education Shapes the Workforce of Tomorrow

When discussing how to future-proof organisations, the focus often lands on skills frameworks, leadership pipelines, and reskilling programs. But some of the most impactful investments in long-term capability are made much earlier — long before an individual steps into the workplace.

At CFAO South Africa, we have firsthand experience of how investing in education creates impact beyond the classroom. Through our Educational Trust bursary programme, CFAO South Africa supports our colleagues' children throughout their education. In 2026 alone, more than 1,000 bursaries were awarded across primary, secondary and tertiary levels, totalling more than 5,000 to date.

These numbers represent more than just figures - they embody increased access to opportunity, family stability, and a future full of possibility.

Education is a strategic, long-term investment that extends our impact into communities, strengthening the future workforce long before individuals become employed. Supporting education today builds resilience, adaptability, and capability required for the future.

As the world of work evolves rapidly, the value shifts from mere qualifications to demonstrated capabilities, including critical thinking, adaptability, problem-solving, and the application of knowledge in real-world contexts.

These capabilities are not developed overnight. They are built over time through stable learning environments, consistent encouragement, and access to quality education.

By investing in our colleagues’ children, we help create a talent pipeline better equipped to navigate an increasingly complex economy. When parents have confidence in their children’s educational prospects, this fosters stability and positively influences workplace performance.

South Africa faces notable skills challenges. While workplace learning remains vital, talent development must go beyond merely drawing on existing systems. We have a responsibility to actively shape the ecosystem that nurtures talent — investing not only in our current workforce but also in the next generation of leaders and innovators.

The CFAO South Africa Educational Trust embodies this long-term view. It recognises that sustainable growth depends on opportunities for learning, adaptation, and thriving. Education is a shared responsibility among families, institutions, government, and business — collaboration amplifies impact.

Our bursary programme reflects this commitment, changing lives, unlocking aspirations, and strengthening futures. Looking ahead, we remain dedicated to investing in education as a foundation of resilience, innovation, and shared success — for our colleagues, our brand, and the communities we serve.

Celebrating Connection: CFAO South Africa’s Second Annual Golf Day
CFAO South Africa recently held its second Golf Day, bringing together our subsidiary companies, partners, and customers for a day of connection and collaboration.

Held at the Serengeti Golf Estate in Johannesburg on 14 May 2026, the event reflects our commitment to building meaningful relationships that extend beyond the business environment.

This year’s edition was especially exciting, as we were joined by renowned professional golfer Shaun Norris Golf, whose career reflects excellence and consistency at the highest level. A two-time DP World Tour winner with 14 professional victories worldwide, Shaun regularly competes in the tour’s premier events and is widely recognised as one of the finest putters in world golf.

We were equally honoured to welcome Lisa Coetzer, one of South Africa’s most promising young talents. At 17, she has already made a remarkable impact by winning the South African Amateur Championship and making the cut at the Women’s SA Open on the LET Tour—an impressive feat early in her career. Known as one of the nation's brightest emerging players, Lisa exemplifies the future of the sport.

More than just a day on the course, this event reflects our continued focus on strengthening relationships and creating opportunities for collaboration across the CFAO South Africa network. It is through these moments of engagement that we reinforce the partnerships that drive our growth and success. Thank you to everyone who partnered with us and participated in this special event.

Leadership. Discipline. People. Performance.
In a demanding and highly competitive market, the 2025 Financial year strengthened a clear belief: leadership in today's marketplace is closely linked to collaboration, respect, empathy, and reputation. In this open leadership conversation, CFAO South Africa reflects on a year defined by resilience, disciplined financial stewardship, and strategic reinvention.

Joined by Andrew Velleman (CEO), Guillaume Thaumiaux (CFO), and Muriel Ogoudjobi (Divisional Head of Human Capital), this discussion explores performance under pressure, the power of diversification, and how people-first leadership positions CFAO South Africa for sustainable growth in the 2026 financial year.

We believe strong leadership, financial rigor, and investment in our colleagues are the foundations of long-term sustainable success. View the discussion here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUjp8t373r4&t=1s
