🛩️ THE STATE OF HIRE & FLY IN SOUTH AFRICA 🛩️
Fellow aviators, we need to talk about the elephant in the hangar.
Social media shows major frustrations holding back our hire & fly community:
✈️ REPEATED CHECK RIDES
You're current. You're qualified. You have 80+ hours on type. Yet every new school treats you like a first-timer. Pilots are asking for a universal approval system - get checked out once by a Grade I or II instructor, and be good to fly at multiple schools until your next license renewal. Makes sense, right?
✈️ AVAILABILITY IS A GAMBLE
Finding a plane that's available, on time, and in good condition? That's where we're letting pilots down that wants to do hour building. If we can't reliably serve local and visiting pilots, we have a problem.
✈️ WHERE ARE THE PERFORMANCE AIRCRAFT?
C172s are great, but where are the Bonanzas? The Barons? The 210s? Higher-performance aircraft for hire & fly in SA. If you want to build complex time or take the family on a proper cross-country, you're out of luck.
✈️ THE INSURANCE BURDEN
10-12% of hull value for hire & fly insurance vs. 1.5% for named pilots. You're covering capital costs, interest, hangerage, hull insurance - yet you don't share in the proceeds when the aircraft sells. The math doesn't make sense for renters.
✈️ SCHOOLS AREN'T INTERESTED
Let's be honest - most flight schools see hire & fly as a side business at best. The margins aren't great, training pays better, so there is a lack of proper rental programs. Some regions don't offer it at all.
✈️ THE TRUST DEFICIT
Owners have been burned - overloaded aircraft, unreported damage, last-minute cancellations, and aircraft treated like rental cars. One bird strike resulted in R100k+ in repairs and the first contact was through a lawyer. This creates a vicious cycle where owners just stop renting.
💡 HERE'S THE THING: We can do better.
The hire & fly market in SA has massive potential, but it needs:
• Standardized checkout procedures pilots can trust
• Better insurance models that don't punish qualified renters
• Flight schools and owners who see this as a real business opportunity
• A culture of accountability from renters who treat aircraft with respect
We created Hire & Fly SA to bridge these gaps and build a better rental ecosystem for everyone - pilots, schools, and aircraft owners.
