We have had many exotic supercars over the past few months at Celtic Tuning but the new BMW i8 was one that stood out from the rest.

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car which operates both a petrol turbo engine and a hybrid synchronous motor. The combustion engine is a 1499cc 3 cylinder petrol turbo unit which is capable of being tuned like any other BMW petrol turbo engine. The electric motor delivers 96KW which is equivalent to 129bhp and 184lbft, and the combustion engine 228bhp and 236lbft, giving the i8 a total power output of 357bhp and 420lbft. Our performance tuning does not affect the electric motor or battery pack in anyway, we are only tuning the petrol engine, and as such the range and operation of the electric motor remains the same as stock.

The i8 has to be run on a low entry lockable 4wd rolling road to ensure that the results are accurate and that the electric motors that are driving the front wheels are not able to accelerate faster than the engine in the back, here at Celtic Tuning HQ we are fortunate to have 2 rolling roads with this capability.

The ECU does need to be removed from the vehicle to be tuned with specialist equipment, this process however does enable us to take a complete backup of the original software and store it if needed at a later date.

Final figures come in at 391bhp and 446lbft torque which is a remarkable achievement from only the 1.5 turbo petrol engine being tuned.

BMW’s M cars are a regular sight at Celtic Tuning and for good reason. Today was a 560bhp F13 BMW M6 twin turbo for our custom stage 1 software, these cars really hit hard as standard but there’s always room for improvement.

Two of the latest generation water cooled ECU’s run this engine - careful removal and handling is required to ensure the electronics are kept dry from the cooling passages that run under them. Both need to be tuned with specific BMW hardware on the bench to extract the data and unlock the OBD socket for serial programming if needed at a later date; a useful feature for further tuning in the future.

With our stage 1 software applied to both ECU’s, putting them back into the car is just as skilled as the removal. Final figures come out at a remarkable 709bhp and 633lbft torque giving truly supercar performance to what was already a seriously quick car.
