“Overseas travel, while exciting, can increase exposure to risk. But most of that risk can be managed with the right approach. If you are travelling, don’t forget to ensure that valuable possessions – from smartphones and cameras to jewellery and luggage – are adequately protected against unforeseen events,” says Tandiwe Cimela, Executive at Elite Risk.

Here’s how to keep your valuables safe while you enjoy the experience. Before you go, make sure you:

• Review your insurance cover and check your worldwide limits
• Specify high-value items like jewellery, watches and cameras
• Update valuations for any recent or high-value purchases
• Inform your insurer if you’re travelling with valuable items or removing them from safekeeping
• Take practical precautions – keep valuables in carry-on luggage, use hotel safes and avoid displaying expensive items in public.

Severe weather conditions are expected to intensify across parts of the Western Cape as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall linked to a cut-off low-pressure system moving into the region from Wednesday into Thursday.

“The current conditions once again highlight how rapidly severe weather can escalate and disrupt both communities and infrastructure,” says Tandiwe Cimela, Executive at ELITE Risk.

“People should avoid unnecessary travel, remain alert to official weather and municipal updates, and act quickly if evacuation instructions are issued. Early action remains one of the most effective ways to reduce risk and prevent loss.”

As winter conditions persist, homeowners are encouraged to take proactive steps to protect their property and loved ones:

• Avoid travelling during extreme weather conditions wherever possible
• If flooding occurs or evacuation is advised, prioritise personal safety above all else
• Ensure roofs, gutters and drainage systems are well maintained and clear of debris
• Check that waterproofing around skylights, verandas and structural extensions is intact
• Ensure windows and seals are secure ahead of heavy rainfall
• Review home insurance cover to ensure adequate protection against severe weather events
• If travel is unavoidable, ensure vehicles are roadworthy and carry emergency contact details
Communities across the affected regions are urged to remain vigilant and support one another as the weather system moves through.

If you drive a high-value or high-risk vehicle in South Africa, security is rarely about a single layer anymore.

Recent concerns raised in the industry highlight how sophisticated vehicle theft has become, particularly for frequently targeted models like Toyota Hilux and Fortuner. In some cases, access to tracking and security systems has raised broader questions around vulnerability.

That’s why many owners are starting to think differently about protection:
• Using more than one tracking provider for added redundancy – in many cases your insurer will insist on this before providing cover.
• Ensuring systems are independently monitored and regularly tested
• Reviewing how quickly recovery systems actually respond in real scenarios

The principle is simple: the more desirable the asset, the more layered the protection should be.

Through our partnership with The Insurance Apprentice , Elite Risk Acceptances believes in the power of young talent shaping the future of South Africa’s insurance industry.

Tandiwe Cimela, executive of Elite Risk, recently attended the Season 12 premiere, and was struck by the energy of the room, getting a glimpse into the future of insurance and the next generation that will shape it.

“TIA is a powerful platform that tests far more than underwriting or risk judgement. The candidates who navigate the high-stakes environment with EQ and package themselves authentically, not performatively, are likely to be the true winners in today’s insurance climate,” says Tandiwe.

This is backed up by data. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 highlights skills such as resilience, adaptability, communication, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness as some of the most critical capabilities for the workforce of the future.

“As artificial intelligence accelerates technical ex*****on, it is these human skills that will increasingly differentiate performance and influence trust,” says Tandiwe.

Despite ongoing fuel price pressure, South Africans are still buying cars, with NAAMSA reporting a 13% year-on-year increase in vehicle sales in April 2026.

For personal lines brokers, this highlights an important consumer trend: while motorists may be feeling the pinch at the fuel pump, vehicle ownership remains a priority for many households.

As affordability pressures mount through rising fuel costs, inflation and potential interest rate hikes, clients are likely to place even greater value on insurance solutions that help them balance adequate cover with their monthly budgets.

This creates an opportunity for brokers to have meaningful conversations around cover structures, excess options and value-added benefits that align with clients’ evolving financial realities, without compromising on protection.

How are you helping policyholders navigate these uncertain times, while still maintaining the cover they need?

South Africa’s latest fuel price increase has now come into effect, with petrol rising by R3.27 per litre and diesel by R5.27 per litre.

For many motorists, higher fuel prices are starting to influence everyday driving decisions — from how often people drive to the type of vehicles they are considering. In some cases, vehicle maintenance and servicing may also be delayed as households look to manage rising costs.

Poll: How are rising fuel prices influencing your motoring decisions?
A. Driving less frequently
B. Combining trips to save fuel
C. Considering a more fuel-efficient vehicle
D. No significant change

Severe weather conditions across parts of the Western Cape continue to result in widespread flooding, storm damage, road disruptions and electricity outages in several areas.

While assessments are still underway, Elite Risk has already received a high volume of claims, particularly from Plettenberg Bay and surrounding regions. Claim volumes remain manageable, and our teams are actively monitoring developments to ensure policyholders receive the support they need. Conditions in Cape Town and nearby areas are also being watched closely as the weather evolves.

We also remind policyholders of our emergency contact details should urgent assistance be required:

Severe weather conditions continue across the Eastern Cape and along the Garden Route, with heavy rainfall causing flooding, road closures and widespread disruption.

Evacuation warnings have been issued for several low lying communities in the Gamtoos Valley after the Kouga Dam exceeded full capacity following days of persistent rain. Damage has also been reported in coastal areas including Victoria Bay, Plettenberg Bay and Keurbooms Strand, while inland towns such as Joubertina and Patensie have experienced extensive flooding and road closures.

“The conditions being experienced underline just how quickly severe weather can escalate,” says Tandiwe Cimela, Executive at Elite Risk.

“People should limit travel where possible, monitor official weather and municipal updates closely, and respond promptly to any evacuation instructions. Taking early action can prevent far greater loss.”

As we move deeper into winter, it’s especially important for homeowners to actively manage risks associated with severe weather events. Some practical steps to consider to help protect your home and loved ones:

• If flash flooding occurs, prioritise getting your family to safety. Never underestimate the force of floodwaters.
• If instructed to evacuate, do so without delay. Property can be replaced — lives cannot.
• Maintain your roof ahead of the rainy season.
• Check and maintain waterproofing regularly, particularly around skylights, verandas and altered areas.
• Keep gutters, drains and downpipes clear — even minor blockages can cause significant damage.
• Ensure windows are properly sealed.
• Make sure your property is adequately insured to avoid disappointment should you need to claim.
• Avoid travelling during extreme weather. If travel is unavoidable, ensure tyres, lights and wipers are in good working order and save emergency numbers on your phone.
Please continue to exercise caution and look out for one another during this period.
