UPDATE: The ABS module fitted to this Chev Sonic was for a Chev Spark! Someone fitted the wrong module to the vehicle!

Mechanic's riddle:

A diagnostic job comes in. Car was purchased with the speedometer not working. Auto Electricians and other workshops have already looked at the car. Their diagnosis is the ABS pump module is faulty... The ECU has already been replaced by another workshop and this didn't solve the problem. We can communicate with the ABS module but the ECU and body control module are unable to communicate with it.

Our call to the customer after 2 days of testing and diagnosis is something along these lines: "We are certain the ABS module on the car is working properly, however, the ABS module definitely needs to be replaced."

This time of year with the colder weather we often get contacted for cars not starting due to bad batteries. Batteries don't like the cold! ❄️🪫️

🔧 Tech tip: If you are having your battery tested insist on a 'load test'. The standard test that is usually done by most shops is not sufficient to tell if the battery is in good condition. 🔧

Too often we hear 'I had my battery tested and it was fine, what could the problem be?' 😕❓
⁣
When a load test is then done the battery fails the test, and it's confirmed the battery indeed needs to be replaced. If the battery passes the standard test as well as a load test, then further fault finding would need to be carried out.

Ford Everest successfully repaired same day

*Swinging but not starting, no fault codes
*Random flickering lights on dash
*2 loose legs on one of the chips on the Immobilier ECU successfully repaired

FIXED! Chev Spark ECU fault successfully diagnosed and repaired! Melted terminals on the ECU resulted in no power to control the idle control valve and the EGR valve getting very hot! Evidence found on ECU that battery power touched the casing and resulted in the damage (Why would the manufacturers put the ECU right behind the battery???).

Vehicle was idling at 1300 rpm's instead of in the 700's. Fixed!

It's always a good feeling when we can fix a fault like this instead of a customer spending thousands on a new ECU and programming 😀 Thanks to SuperComputing for the great ECU repair work done once again!

Tip: Always be vigilant when disconnecting and reconnecting the battery of your car. Always disconnect the negative terminal first and when reconnecting make sure to fit the negative terminal last. Also, allow at least 5-15 minutes after switching off the vehicle for all the systems to de-energise before disconnecting the battery. Failure to do so can cause voltage spikes and damage to expensive computer modules!

Chev Cruze
Fault codes: P0036, P0138, P0140, P0141 all relating to the 02 sensor and check engine light on:

Visual inspection done and problem found - the plug had simply come loose from the sensor.

If only all diagnostics could be this easy!
