UPDATED WEATHER WARNING | Nelson Mandela Bay

The South African Weather Service has intensified the original weather warning - the Level 5 warning has now been upgraded to a Orange Level 8 warning.

Updated forecasts indicate up to 200mm of rainfall between Wednesday and Thursday.
Expected rainfall:
🌧 Wednesday: Up to 100mm
🌧 Thursday: Approximately 50–100mm

Additional Marine Warning
A Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging waves has been issued for Nelson Mandela Bay.
Waves of 4–5 metres are expected along the coast.

Residents are advised that high tides will be experienced at the following times:
🌊 Wednesday 05:00 and 17:25
🌊 Thursday 05:30 and 18:00

Uhmmm…

We need to talk about something today.

Something that has genuinely divided more South African men than politics, rugby selection, diesel prices, and whether Eskom is “actually getting better now.”

Outboard motors.

Specifically…

• Yamaha.
• Suzuki.
• And Mercury sitting in the corner looking expensive like a divorced guy at a golf estate restaurant.

But before we start this war properly…

I need you to guess something.

A proper guess.

What percentage of the SA outboard market do you think Mercury holds right now?

2026. South Africa. Year to date.

Go on.

Take a swing.

30%?

25%?

15%?

…

…

…

Ja.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝟲.𝟭%.

SIX.
POINT.
ONE.

There are probably Milky Lane branches with higher market share than that.

And immediately... IMMEDIATELY, I can already hear the Mercury okes warming up in the comments.

I can hear the Oakleys going on.

I can hear somebody typing:
“Market share means nothing bru... quality over quantity”

Relax.

We’re getting there.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗔 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗜𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗔 𝗧𝘄𝗼-𝗠𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁

Let’s stop pretending for five minutes.

This isn’t America.

This isn’t Australia.

This isn’t some Florida bass fishing YouTube channel where okes have triple 450Rs on boats worth more than townhouses in Boksburg.

This is South Africa.

And in South Africa…

The outboard market is basically two oke’s fighting in the parking lot while everyone else watches.

• Suzuki.
• Yamaha.

That’s it.

That’s the fight.

Everything else is background music.

Because between the two of them?

• Suzuki: 58.3%
• Yamaha: 35.1%

Combined?

93.4% of the entire SA fourstroke outboard market.

Ninety.
Three.
Point.
Four.

𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁

Look.

I love Mercury.

Like PROPERLY love Mercury.

Mercury motors are beautiful.

The engineering?
Phenomenal.

The styling?
Aggressive.

The racing pedigree?
Absolutely ridiculous.

A black Mercury Verado hanging off the back of a boat still makes grown men behave irrationally.

There’s something about them.

It’s like seeing a black AMG pull into the parking lot.

Even people who hate it still look twice.

But unfortunately…

Boat dealers don’t survive on vibes.

And the problem for Mercury in South Africa is very simple:

𝗛𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝘂𝘂𝗿.

Finished.

Done.

That’s the whole thesis.

Because South African boating people are not American boating people.

Our economy is held together with hope, EFT screenshots, and one oke named Kyle who “can source it cheaper.”

The average SA boater isn’t trying to buy the ultimate performance machine.

He wants:
• reliability
• parts availability
• fuel economy
• a dealer that answers the phone
• and a motor that doesn’t require selling a Hilux on Facebook Marketplace every time it needs a service

And that’s where Mercury starts struggling locally.

Not because the motors are bad.

Because the VALUE conversation changes completely in South Africa.

Mercury is premium.

SA boaters are practical.

That gap matters.

𝗬𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘆𝗼𝘁𝗮 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝘂𝘅 𝗢𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿

35.1%.

That’s still massive.

And Yamaha earned every single percentage point of it.

Because Yamaha figured something out decades ago:

South African okes LOVE reliability.

Not “mostly reliable.”

Not “reliable if serviced properly.”

Not “reliable according to forums.”

No no.

South Africans want:
• turn key
• motor starts
• life continues

That’s it.

And Yamaha built an entire empire around exactly that feeling.

The Yamaha owner is usually one of three okes:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗚𝘂𝘆
This oke made spreadsheets.

He watched videos.

He compared torque curves.

He spoke to dealers.

He consulted his cousin.

He asked Facebook.

He read forums from 2017.

He finally bought the Yamaha and now speaks about it like he selected the next Pope.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 “𝗠𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝗱 𝗢𝗻𝗲” 𝗚𝘂𝘆
This oke never even considered anything else.

His dad had Yamaha.
His uncle had Yamaha.
His grandfather probably fought in the Anglo-Boereoorlog with a Yamaha somehow.

There was never another option.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 “𝗜 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀” 𝗚𝘂𝘆
This oke doesn’t care about brand wars.

He doesn’t care about Facebook comments.

He just wants to fish in peace and go home before the traffic at the ramp starts.

And honestly?

Fair enough.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝘇𝘂𝗸𝗶… 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗢𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴?

58.3%.

That’s not “doing well.”

That’s domination.

That’s “the teacher hands back the test and one oke got 94% while everyone else is fighting for second place.”

Suzuki Marine SA has absolutely COOKED the market over the last few years.

And the wild thing?

They didn’t even do it loudly.

Suzuki never behaved like the cool kid.

They never made the biggest noise.

They never walked into the room screaming:
“LOOK AT US.”

They just quietly:
• built solid motors
• priced them properly
• expanded the dealer network
• sorted the fuel consumption
• made ownership easy
• and let the customers do the marketing

That’s how you win South Africa.

Not with hype.

With practicality.

And once an SA oke becomes convinced he made the smartest financial decision possible?

Finished.

You will NEVER hear the end of it.

The Suzuki oke becomes an evangelist.

You ask him what time it is and somehow he’s explaining Lean Burn Technology.

You compliment his trailer and now you’re trapped in a 17-minute fuel consumption presentation.

You mention servicing costs and he starts smiling like a forex trader in 2021.

These okes are happy.

Dangerously happy.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗴𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝘀

Because both sides are right.

That’s the frustrating part.

The Yamaha oke isn’t lying.

The Suzuki oke also isn’t lying.

Both motors are excellent.

Both are reliable.

Both have solid dealer networks.

Both have excellent resale.

Both can run for years if you service them properly.

The difference between them in 2026 is honestly MUCH smaller than the internet wants you to believe.

Most of the argument now comes down to:
• dealer experience
• pricing
• who your mates run
• and what your dad shouted at you when you were twelve

That’s basically it.

But because boating okes are emotionally attached to their purchases…

Nobody can ever just say:
“Ja both are good.”

NO.

Impossible.

The Yamaha oke believes Suzuki owners are cult members.

The Suzuki oke believes Yamaha owners are stuck in 2014.

And the Mercury oke thinks both of them are peasants.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗼 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿

Want the actual smartest advice?

Buy the dealer.

Not the logo.

BUY.
THE.
DEALER.

Because when something goes wrong and eventually something always goes wrong because boats are basically floating financial decisions...

You don’t care about Facebook opinions anymore.

You care about:
• who answers the phone
• who can get parts quickly
• who treats you properly
• who actually knows what they’re doing
• and who won’t disappear when warranty conversations start getting uncomfortable

That matters more than the badge on the cowling.

And the smartest boaters in SA already know this.

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀

So where are we ACTUALLY at in South Africa in 2026?

• Suzuki is absolutely dominating the market
• Yamaha remains a powerhouse with deeply loyal customers
• Mercury is building unbelievable premium motors that most SA okes simply cannot justify financially

And honestly?

It’s good for boating.

Competition makes everybody better.

Suzuki pushed Yamaha harder.

Yamaha forced Suzuki to improve.

Mercury keeps reminding everybody what top-end engineering looks like.

And the customer wins.

Even if the customer is still arguing on Facebook at 11:47pm about oil ratios and resale values.

𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗼 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗢𝗸𝗲𝘀

• Are those market share numbers what you expected?
• Suzuki okes: what made you switch?
• Yamaha okes: what would actually make you leave Yamaha?
• Mercury okes: be honest… how many times have you defended your service invoice to your wife?
• And the big one:
