FINDING HIDDEN LEAKS 🚗

Pinpointing elusive oil or coolant leaks deep within a modern engine bay often requires looking where human eyes and hands cannot reach.Using an articulated digital borescopes allows technicians to inspect tight gaps behind intake manifolds, underneath turbochargers, and around cylinder head blocks without unnecessary component dismantling.
Here is why precision scoping is vital for accurate diagnostics
- Unobstructed Visual Access: Navigating a flexible camera probe into cramped engine voids reveals hairline cracks, weeping gaskets, and slow hose leaks before they turn into major failures.
- Eliminating Guesswork: Viewing the exact source of a fluid leak prevents misdiagnosis and avoids replacing expensive parts blindly.
- Targeted Repairs: Finding the precise point of failure ensures the repair addresses the root cause right the first time.
- Precision tools paired with experienced diagnostics protect your engine from unexpected fluid loss and costly breakdowns.

DQ200 REVERSE GEAR FAILURE 🚗

This VW Polo arrived at the workshop with a customer complaint of the transmission failing to select reverse gear. A complete diagnostic scan revealed no active fault codes stored in the system.

Physical inspection of the internal components uncovered the root failure:
- Broken Gear Tooth: A single gear tooth broken off the geartrain assembly, preventing proper gear engagement.
- Mechatronic Magnet Capture: The loose metal fragment migrated through the transmission fluid and locked itself onto one of the mechatronic unit's magnets.
- Prevented Secondary Damage: Catching this metallic debris early prevented it from causing damage to the mechatronic.

Replacing the damaged geartrain assembly restored full shifting functionality and protected the transmission control unit from total failure.

Experiencing unusual transmission behavior, slipping gears, or failure to engage reverse? Contact us today to book a diagnostic/inspection.

Is your VW Tiguan acting up in traffic? Don’t ignore these warning signs! ⚠️

If you drive a Volkswagen Tiguan with a DSG gearbox, you might have noticed:

❌ Sudden jerking or shuddering when pulling away or changing gears
❌ A delay after putting the car in Drive or Reverse before it actually moves
❌ The dashboard flashing PRNDS, an EPC light, or a gear/spanner icon
❌ Car going into "Limp Mode" or skipping gears (losing odd or even gears)

These are the classic signs of Mechatronic unit failure. Driving with a failing Mechatronic can turn a straightforward repair into a costly full gearbox recon!

WALK-IN TODAY FOR A QUICK DIAGNOSTIC SCAN!

No appointment needed for initial diagnostic scans, just pop into our workshop and let our specialists take a look.

WEIRD SOUNDS EPISODE 3: MANUAL TRANSMISSION NOISES 🚗

Unusual mechanical noises coming from the transmission area during gear selection or idling are clear indicators of internal component wear in a manual drivetrain.

A failing dual-mass flywheel, a dry pilot bearing, or a worn clutch release bearing each produce distinct acoustic warning signs:

1. Dual-Mass Flywheel Play: Excessive internal spring wear creates a heavy metallic rattling or knocking noise at idle, which often disappears when depressing the clutch pedal.
2. Release Bearing Failure: A constant squealing or chirping noise when the clutch pedal is pressed down points directly to a failing release bearing under load.
3. Pilot Bearing Binding: A high-pitched squeal when the vehicle is in neutral with the clutch engaged indicates a dry or seizing pilot bearing supporting the transmission input shaft.

Identifying these sounds early prevents sudden clutch failure and protects the transmission housing from catastrophic internal damage.

☀️ BEAT THE HEAT: KEEP YOUR CABIN ICE COLD 🚗

Rising temperatures make a weak, lukewarm car aircon unbearable on the road.

Automotive aircon systems naturally lose refrigerant gas over time. Low gas levels force your system to work harder while blowing lukewarm air into the cabin.

Visit us for a regas and get your cabin cooling back to ice-cold before the heat hits.

OIL LIGHT ON WITH CORRECT OIL LEVEL? 🚗

This Audi A1 arrived with a red oil pressure warning light illuminated on the dash, an accurate oil level on the dipstick, and a distinct metallic rattle coming from the engine bay.

Dropping the oil sump pinpointed the exact issue: carbon buildup completely choked the oil pickup screen.

A full oil dipstick only confirms fluid volume in the sump; it does not guarantee fluid circulation. When carbon deposits block the pickup tube, oil cannot reach the top of the engine.

Here is what happened inside the engine:

1. Hydraulic Tensioner Collapse: The timing chain tensioner relies on pressurized oil to keep the chain taut. Loss of pressure caused the chain to slacken and slap against the guides, creating severe engine noise and stretching the chain.
2. Oil Pump Scuffing: Running dry starved the oil pump of lubrication, scoring its internal gears beyond tolerance.
3. Bullet Saved: Fortuitously, the engine was shut off before valve-to-piston contact occurred. A full inspection confirmed all valves remained undamaged.

Fitting a new pickup tube, replacing the oil pump, oil filter, and fresh oil after flushing the engine, alongside installing a fresh timing chain kit, fully restored oil pressure and quiet engine operation without needing head work

Boiling or bubbling coolant inside the expansion tank is a clear indicator of severe cooling system pressure loss or extreme overheating.

In this case, the root cause was a hairline crack on the plastic thermostat housing.

Here is what happens when a thermostat housing leaks:

1. Pressure Drop: The cooling system relies on a sealed, pressurized environment to raise the boiling point of antifreeze above 100°C.
2. Flash Boiling: A leak in the housing releases system pressure. Without pressure, the coolant boils instantly at normal operating temperatures, creating steam pockets and violent bubbling in the expansion bottle.
3. Overheating Risk: Steam pockets prevent liquid coolant from circulating through the engine block, leading to rapid cylinder head warping or head gasket failure if ignored.

Replacing the cracked housing, fitting a new thermostat, pressure-testing the circuit, and bleeding the system of air pockets fully restored normal operating pressure and temperature control.
