When you import a car from Japan, remember: it's not a new car.

Most have spent years on the road before export. By the time they reach Zimbabwe, they've gone through daily use, long storage, and shipping conditions.

Even in Japan's good environment, oil degrades, filters clog, and fluids lose their effectiveness.

The car may look clean and fresh. But underneath, the engine oil, transmission fluid, and filters are already worn.

Driving it without servicing is a risk.

Nothing may happen immediately. It may feel smooth. That's exactly the danger. You're running on old fluids and an unknown service history.

That first service is not optional. It's your reset point. It protects your engine, improves performance, and prevents hidden damage.

When your car landed, did you service it immediately, or are you still driving on yesterday's maintenance?

Most drivers focus on the oil. The filter gets ignored.

But here's what's actually happening inside your engine right now — tiny metal particles, dirt, and carbon are circulating with every revolution. The oil filter's job is to catch them before they grind against your engine components.

A cheap filter cuts corners where it hurts most. Weaker filter material. Smaller filtration area. Poor internal valves that fail during cold starts — exactly when your engine is most vulnerable.

Nothing dramatic happens the next day. Your engine still runs.

But every kilometre, more contaminants slip through. Engine wear builds quietly. And by the time you notice a problem, the damage is already done.

Genuine filters cost a little more. But they're protecting something that costs far more to replace.

Next time you're booking a service — are you asking about the oil filter, or just the oil?

Running a car in Zimbabwe is not the same as running a car in the country it was designed for.

Most vehicles were built for smoother highways, cleaner fuel, and predictable service schedules. Here, cars face dust, heavy traffic, stop-and-go driving, and delayed maintenance — because life happens.

The economics of car ownership here are different.

A small service done on time can save thousands later. A delayed oil change or skipped fluid check seems harmless today — but the bill usually arrives months later, when it's least convenient.

Responsible ownership means understanding that maintenance is part of the real cost of mobility. People who plan for that cost keep their cars longer and avoid sudden repair shocks.

Maintenance is always cheaper than neglect.

When you calculate what it costs to run your car, do you include maintenance — or only fuel?

🔴 That "small knock" your engine makes in the morning?

It's not warming up. It's starving.

When oil sits too long, it loses viscosity and turns acidic. For the first 3–5 seconds after you start a cold engine, oil isn't circulating yet — metal is rubbing directly on metal.

Fresh oil recovers fast. Degraded oil? It never fully protects at all.

Most engine damage in Zimbabwe doesn't happen from accidents. It happens from 6am, every morning, for months — quietly, invisibly, until the repair bill arrives.

The worst part: your car won't tell you. No warning light. No obvious symptom. Just a little extra noise you learned to ignore.

💸 A proper oil change — $15 to $30.
💸 A seized or sludged engine — $400 to $1,200+.

The delay doesn't save money. It borrows it at a very bad interest rate.

🔴 WHEN THE CAR BEGS AND NO ONE LISTENS

That's how this Toyota Allion came in.

No brake fluid in the reservoir. And when we pulled the rear drum — bent brake shoe, broken hardware, failed wheel cylinder, brake fluid pooled on the ground.

Here's what most likely happened: the brake shoe wore down gradually. Because it was never replaced, it loosened and started damaging the surrounding hardware. The broken parts then ruptured the wheel cylinder. Fluid leaked out. Braking was gone.

One worn part. A chain reaction. A repair bill that could have been avoided.

The warning signs were there long before this — unusual sounds at the rear, a soft pedal, longer stopping distances. Small signals that something was wrong. Ignored, they became this.

Brakes don't fail suddenly. They fail slowly, then all at once.

Your next service is your early warning system. Don't wait for sounds. Don't wait for no brakes.

When did you last have your brakes checked?

Stop and read this if you have an automatic transmission car.

Most drivers stop the car, shift straight into P (Park), then pull the handbrake. That seems normal, but it forces your transmission to hold the entire weight of the vehicle.

Inside the gearbox is a small metal part called a parking pawl. When you select Park before applying the handbrake, that tiny pin is what prevents the car from rolling.

If you are on a slope, the pressure on that pin becomes huge.

That loud CLUNK when you shift out of Park on a hill? That’s the transmission releasing the weight of the car.

Over time, this stress can wear down or even break the parking pawl.

The correct way to park:

1. Stop with your foot on the brake.

2. Shift to N (Neutral).

3. Apply the handbrake.

4. Release the brake and let the car settle.

5. Press the brake again and shift to P.

Let the handbrake hold the car, not the gearbox.

Most people collect their car after a service and ask one question: "Is it done?"

There's a better question: "What did you find?"

Servicing isn't just oil and filters. It's also inspection. A good service should reveal worn belts, small leaks, weak batteries, or brake wear — long before they become expensive problems.

When you ask what was found, two things happen: you understand your car's condition, and the person servicing it knows you're paying attention.

Cars rarely fail without warning. They give small clues first. The real value of a service is catching those clues early.

A proper service isn't just a routine — it's a report on your vehicle.

When you collect your car after a service, which question do you ask — "Is it done?" or "What did you find?"

Sometimes the most responsible thing a mechanic can say is “No.”

No, we can’t use thicker oil just because it’s cheaper.
No, we can’t ignore that warning light.
No, we shouldn’t skip the transmission service.

In Zimbabwe, many imported vehicles are already managing wear from previous use. Cutting corners may save money today, but it increases risk tomorrow.

A professional doesn’t chase every request.
They protect the machine — even when it’s uncomfortable.

If your mechanic never disagrees with you, ask yourself why.

Would you rather hear “yes” now and pay later, or hear “no” and protect your investment?

Most transmission failures don't start with a bang.

They build quietly — over months and kilometres — until one day your car slips, hesitates, or won't engage properly.

In Zimbabwe, imported CVTs and hybrid transmissions are especially sensitive to fluid condition. Yet many owners service their engine oil faithfully and never touch the transmission — for years.

Transmission fluid does more than lubricate. It carries hydraulic pressure and controls how your clutch engages. When it breaks down, heat builds and wear accelerates. By the time you feel slipping, serious damage has already set in.

A CVT overhaul can cost thousands. A fluid service costs a fraction.

Preventive maintenance isn't expensive. Neglect is.

Can you remember the last time your transmission fluid was changed?
