1990 VW Caddy Sport

In South Africa, these were marketed as versatile “bakkies” for everyday use, with good parts availability due to the ongoing Citi Golf production. The Sport appealed to enthusiasts wanting something more exciting than a basic work truck.

This 1990 VW Mk1 Caddy Sport is powered by a stock 1.8 KR 16v engine equipped with Dictator management for reliable performance. It has recently received a fresh full respray, with a solid floor showing no signs of rust. The truck rides on desirable 15-inch TSW Hockenheim wheels, giving it a sporty stance while maintaining its practical bakkie character. Overall, a clean and well-presented example with key mechanical and cosmetic upgrades.

In South Africa, Volkswagen continued producing the Mk1-based Caddy at the Uitenhage plant from around 1981/1982 until 2006–2007, alongside the long-running Citi Golf. This made it one of the longest-lived Mk1 derivatives.
South African versions often incorporated local adaptations, updated components over the years and were popular as practical, affordable work vehicles or fun personal ‘bakkies’.

The Sport trim was a performance/leisure-oriented variant, positioned as a sportier pickup with Golf GTI-inspired features.

Engine: Typically a 1.8-litre petrol Many “Sport” models used engines similar to the Golf GTI, including 8v or 16v KR variants. These provided lively performance for a lightweight pickup.

• Transmission: Usually a 5-speed manual.

• Chassis & Suspension: Mk1 Golf front, with a stronger rear setup using leaf springs for load-carrying capability. It had a longer wheelbase than the standard Golf for the pickup bed.

• Body & Styling: Two-seater cab with an open or canopied load bed.
The Sport often featured:
• Sporty body kits, side stripes/decals, and badging.
• GTI-style interior touches (seats, steering wheel, trim).
• Distinctive bumpers and graphics.

It was a fun yet practical vehicle that was nimble like a Golf but with utility perks.

A typical South African high performance special!

In most markets including the UK, the ‘1275 GT’ was the ultimate Mini, but South Africa got one even more powerful - the lesser-known ‘1275 GTS’.

Here we have one of the rare survivors in very fitting and truly South African, green and gold!

Produced at Cape Town’s Blackheath plant, it was based on the Clubman shell and boasted a leyland 1275 engine running twin SU carbs (unlike the GT) with high-compression pistons, double valve springs and an increased compression ratio which afforded it a very respectable 74 bhp.

Mini collectors the world over would likely want to get their hands on this car as it’s seldom they reach the open market.

If you’re reading this from the UK, we needn’t tell you what a fantastic car this would be to import and if you’re a Mini fan you most likely know about the ‘GTS’ already.

This particular example was sourced for a client before undergoing restoration.

An added touch was the gold wheels to match the decals which really finishes off the car.
