This exceptional 1972 VW Type 181 (also known as the Kübelwagen successor, “The Thing” in the US, or Trekker in the UK) stands out as a genuine piece of military history. It served with the Bophuthatswana Defence Force (often referred to as Boputu) and remains in its original military livery – a rugged, olive-green finish that has aged with authentic patina. According to the owner, it is believed to be the only surviving example worldwide that saw actual army service in this configuration, complete with all original lights and military-spec features still intact.
- Background and Design
The VW Type 181 was developed in the late 1960s primarily for the West German Bundeswehr as a lightweight, versatile multi-purpose vehicle to bridge the gap until the (ultimately cancelled) Europa Jeep project. Over 50,000 military-spec units were delivered to NATO forces between 1968 and 1979, prized for their simplicity, reliability, and low maintenance costs using proven Beetle mechanicals.
Built on a rear-engined, air-cooled flat-four platform (typically 1500cc or 1600cc in military trim), it features:
• Removable doors and fold-down windshield for open-air utility.
• High ground clearance with military gearing options (often including reduction boxes/portal axles on service vehicles).
• Rugged construction ideal for light patrol, courier, and utility duties.
Production spanned Germany, Mexico, and other locations until the early 1980s, with civilian versions following military success. This 1972 example captures the model at its purposeful peak.
- This Vehicle’s Story
Unlike many restored or civilian-converted 181s, this one carries a history with the Bophuthatswana military.
Bophuthatswana, one of South Africa’s former homelands, maintained its own defence capabilities during the apartheid era, and vehicles like this rugged VW would have been perfectly suited to the region’s demanding terrain and operational needs.
It retains its original military paint and fittings, including the full complement of lights, next to the headlights and above the bumper or small map reading lights for soldiers also there are clips for leather covers that go over the headlights when they are not in use to reduce reflection and avoid enemy detection. These are all rare survival traits after decades of potential civilian modifications. The canvas top and overall stance give it unmistakable period military character, while the Beetle-derived running gear ensures it remains mechanically straightforward for enthusiasts.
Bophuthatswana was one of the four “independent” bantustans (homelands) created by the apartheid South African government in the 1970s for the Tswana people. It had limited autonomy, including its own small military (BDF), heavily supported, trained, and equipped by the South African Defence Force (SADF).
The Type 181 was a basic, rugged, open-top utility vehicle ideal for light military/police duties in rough terrain — cheap to maintain, simple mechanically, and produced in large numbers for civilian and export markets.
