Some motorways may have special chevron markings in the centre of the traffic lanes. They are painted onto the road as a warning to drivers that they should leave at least a two-second gap to the vehicle in front - These are spaced 40 metres apart. There will be signs advising you to check your distance, keep two chevrons apart and keep your distance. 🚙

What happens during the driving test?

There's 5 parts to the driving test and we thought we'd give you an overview of each part.

1️⃣Eyesight check
You’ll have to read a number plate from a distance of:

20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate.
20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate.

2️⃣‘Show me, tell me’ questions

You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions.

You’ll be asked the:
‘tell me’ question at the start of your test, before you start driving
‘show me’ question while you’re driving

3️⃣Your general driving ability
You’ll drive in various road and traffic conditions, but not on motorways.

The examiner will give you directions that you should follow. Driving test routes are not published, so you cannot check them before your test.

Pulling over at the side of the road
You’ll be asked to pull over and pull away during your test, including:
Normal stops at the side of the road
Pulling out from behind a parked vehicle
A hill start

You might also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

4️⃣Reversing your vehicle
The examiner will ask you to do one of the following exercises:
Parallel park at the side of the road
Park in a parking bay - either by driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you which you have to do)
Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for around 2 car lengths, and rejoin the traffic

5️⃣ Independent driving
You’ll have to drive for about 20 minutes by following either:

Directions from a sat nav
traffic signs
The examiner will tell you which you have to follow.

Your driving test is nothing to fear. Our driving instructors have been trained to make sure you are 100% ready for your test when it comes around.

Here's a handy guide to knowing your speed limits on different roads and in different vehicles but always be a good driving detective and look out for road signs that indicate what the speed limit should be. 🚙

The speed limit is the absolute maximum and does not mean it is safe to drive at that speed irrespective of conditions. 🚫 Unsafe speed increases the chances of causing a collision (or being unable to avoid one.)

Driving at speeds too fast for the road and traffic conditions is dangerous. You should always reduce your speed when;
- the road layout or condition presents hazards, such as bends
- sharing the road with pedestrians, particularly children, older adults or disabled people, cyclists and horse riders, horse-drawn vehicles and motorcyclists
- weather conditions make it safer to do so
- driving at night as it is more difficult to see other road users

🚦 MYTH-BUSTING - Driving Edition! 🧠✨
Let’s clear up a few more driving misconceptions!

❌ MYTH: You must always stick to the left lane on a dual carriageway.
✅ TRUTH: Keep left unless overtaking — but staying in the left lane isn’t mandatory if you’re overtaking slower traffic safely.

❌ MYTH: You have to drive as slow as possible to pass your test.
✅ TRUTH: Driving too slowly can be just as dangerous as speeding. Examiners want to see that you can keep up with the flow of traffic safely and confidently.

❌ MYTH: It’s illegal to drive barefoot.
✅ TRUTH: There’s no specific law against it, but your footwear (or lack of it) must let you control the pedals properly — so safe, secure footwear is always best!

Rules for parking on Double Yellow Lines from The Highway Code🚗
You MUST NOT wait or park on yellow lines during the times of operation shown on nearby time plates (or zone entry signs if in a Controlled Parking Zone.)
Double yellow lines indicate a prohibition of waiting at any time even if there are no upright signs.
You MUST NOT wait, park, or stop to set down and pick up passengers, on school entrance markings when upright signs indicate a prohibition of stopping.

Did you know that certain health conditions must be declared to the DVLA? Not doing so could land you with a £1,000 fine – or worse, prosecution if you're involved in an accident. 😬
Here are some of the most common conditions drivers must report:
🧠 Epilepsy or seizures
❤️ Heart conditions (like arrhythmia, pacemakers, angina)
😴 Sleep apnoea or extreme tiredness
👁 Vision problems (double vision, glaucoma, or not meeting eyesight standards)
🩸 Diabetes (if treated with insulin)
🧍‍♂️ Stroke, mini-stroke (TIA), or blackouts
🧠 Neurological conditions (MS, Parkinson’s, brain injury)
🧠 Mental health conditions (if they affect your ability to drive)
🍺 Drug or alcohol dependency
💡 If you’re unsure whether your condition affects your driving, check with your doctor or visit gov.uk/health-conditions-and-driving.
✅ Stay safe. Stay legal. Always declare!
