Four digits on a tyre sidewall can tell you when it was made: the first two show the week and the last two the year. In the example shown, 2619 means week 26 of 2019.

Check all four tyres, then look at tread, cracking, damage and whether the fitted specification suits the car. Photographs are useful for screening, but tyre condition still needs checking at the vehicle.

Bring a short written checklist, a torch and a phone for notes or photographs. Read the advert closely, write down anything you want clarified, and leave enough time to look at the body, cabin, history file and paperwork without rushing.
