Kimberley Tyre & 4WD Observations 🚙🛞
Being tyre people, we had more organised on this trip than just sightseeing! Along with checking out the incredible range of 4WDs and touring setups around Kununurra, we also visited the local Bridgestone and Tyreplus stores and headed out on a 4WD tour through the Kimberley.
One thing Matt learnt from talking to locals and experienced outback travellers was just how important it is to get the balance right between tyre choice, tyre pressures and road conditions. Running pressures that are too high can contribute to corrugations forming on dirt roads, while pressures that are too low, especially with the wrong tyre for the conditions, can put excessive stress on the tyre and lead to sidewall damage or cracking. In a region like this, with extreme heat and challenging terrain, having the right tyres and adjusting pressures to suit the conditions is absolutely critical!
We also spent time observing the huge variety of vehicles around town. It’s worth noting that many would have been visitors passing through from other parts of Australia, rather than local vehicles, but there was still a fascinating mix of tyre brands and setups. Mickey Thompson seemed particularly popular on a number of the American trucks and some LandCruisers, while Toyo, Yokohama, Falken, Cooper, BFGoodrich and others were all well represented.
Our 4WD tour took us across sand, rock and rugged Kimberley terrain on a set of Yokohama A/Ts, which handled the conditions with ease. It was a great reminder that up here, vehicles and tyres aren’t just for looks — they’re built for serious touring and adventure.
