If your work vehicles are about to sit idle over the Christmas and New Year break, it's worth thinking about before you lock the gate.

A vehicle that sits unused for a few weeks can come back to a flat or weakened battery, especially older batteries or ones already working harder than they should. That means a slow, frustrating start to the new year instead of getting straight back to work.

Worth considering before the break:

Battery condition, especially on older vehicles
Anything drawing power while parked
A battery maintainer for vehicles sitting a while

A bit of prep now can mean less hassle getting the fleet moving again in January.

Fleet managers — save this before the shutdown.

Intermittent faults don't care what the vehicle looks like, the same diagnostic approach that finds a fault in a car applies to a digger out on a forestry site. Different environment, same underlying systems. 🚜

It's part of why "auto electrical" covers a lot more ground than people expect. If it's got an electrical system, there's a good chance we can help with it.

Got machinery or equipment with an intermittent fault that doesn't fit the usual "car" category? Ask us. 📞 0508 227 772 | www.allauto.net.nz

Most people know the battery starts the car. Fewer people know what keeps it running once it's started.

That's the alternator's job. Once the engine's going, the alternator takes over, charging the battery and powering everything electrical while you drive, from headlights to indicators to the stereo.

If the alternator isn't doing its job properly, the battery slowly drains even while the engine's running. You might not notice until the vehicle really struggles to start again, or dies altogether on the road.

The battery gets the blame. But the alternator is often the real story.

Two vehicles with the same warning light can have completely different causes.

Same symbol on the dash doesn't mean the same problem underneath. A battery light on one car might be a failing alternator. On another, it might be a loose connection, a parasitic drain, or a fault somewhere else in the charging system entirely.

That's why guessing based on the light alone, or replacing the same part that "fixed it for a mate" doesn't always fix your vehicle. The warning light tells you something's wrong. It doesn't tell you what.

Same light, different vehicle, different cause. Worth remembering next time something comes on.

Classic American cars bring a lot of character. Sometimes they also bring wiring that was never built for New Zealand roads, weather, or electrical standards.

This one came in with wiring issues typical of US imports — the kind of thing that isn't always obvious until you're relying on it. We went through and rewired it properly, so the car keeps its classic looks without the electrical guesswork underneath.

Imported classics are some of our favourite jobs. The character is the easy part — it's the wiring that needs the attention.

Ask an Auto Electrician: "Why Does It Only Play Up When It's Raining?"

We hear this one a lot, and it makes sense once you know why.

Moisture can get into connectors, wiring, or components that are otherwise fine, and cause a fault that only shows up in wet conditions. Once things dry out, the connection can work normally again, which makes it easy to dismiss.

It's not the vehicle being dramatic. Corrosion and moisture ingress inside a connector or wiring loom are genuine, common causes of "it only does it sometimes" faults.

If your fault seems to follow the weather, that's actually a useful clue, not a coincidence.

Your battery might not actually be the problem.

A flat battery gets blamed for a lot of things it didn't cause. Sometimes it's the charging system not topping it up properly. Sometimes it's something quietly drawing power overnight. Sometimes the battery is fine, and the real fault is upstream.

Replacing the battery can fix the symptom without fixing the cause, which means you're back here again in a few weeks.

If your battery keeps dying, it's worth getting the actual cause checked, not just the battery.
Save this for next time your battery lets you down.
