And that’s a wrap! Today, members of the Hemby Bridge Fire Department took UTV23 to provide fire suppression and EMS coverage for the annual Indian Trail Family Fun Day.

Hemby Bridge Fire Department is monitoring areas experiencing flooding. As water levels rise, roadways that normally appear safe can quickly become hazardous.

Remember Turn Around, Don't Drown!
Just a few inches of moving water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle, and floodwaters often hide dangers such as washed-out pavement, debris, and open drainage systems.

🚨 Never drive through flooded roadways.
🚨 Obey all road closure signs and barricades.
🚨 Avoid walking through floodwaters.
🚨 Move to higher ground if flooding threatens your area.
🚨Keep children away from creeks, drainage ditches, and flooded areas.
🚨 Monitor local weather forecasts and emergency alerts.

We have been working with the Union County Sheriff’s Office and are prepared to respond when needed, but your safety starts with making smart decisions before an emergency occurs. If you encounter flooding, slow down, use caution, and seek an alternate route.

Fire hydrants need adequate clearance so crews can quickly locate, access, and connect to them during an emergency. A hydrant hidden behind bushes or blocked by vegetation can slow water supply operations. As you complete your seasonal yard work, take a few minutes to look around hydrants on your property:

🚨 Keep grass and weeds trimmed
🚨 Remove overgrown bushes and branches
🚨 Maintain at least 3 feet of clear space around the hydrant
🚨 Ensure the hydrant remains visible from the roadway
🚨Never place decorations, landscaping features, or fencing that restrict access

A few minutes of maintenance today can make a big difference during an emergency tomorrow.

As Memorial Day comes to a close, we would be remiss if we did not take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of today.

In the fire service, we understand the meaning of sacrifice, duty, and commitment to something greater than ourselves. Tonight, we honor those who answered a higher call of service and paid the highest price. Please join us in taking a moment to reflect, remember, and give thanks to our fallen military heroes and the families who continue to carry their legacy forward.

Today Chief Blythe attended the NC Fire Legislative Day to discuss important issues impacting the fire service both locally and across the state.

Nearly 200 fire service members from across North Carolina came together today for NC Fire Service Legislative Day to ensure the voice of the fire service was heard loud and clear at the General Assembly.

Hosted by the NC State Firefighters’ Association and the NC Association of Fire Chiefs, the day provided an important opportunity for firefighters and fire officers to meet directly with legislators and discuss the key issues impacting the North Carolina fire service.

A special thank you to Senator Warren Daniel, Representative Neal Jackson, Representative Paul Scott, and Senator Tim Moffitt for taking the time to speak with the group before they headed to the Legislative Building to meet with their representatives.

We also extend our appreciation to Atlantic Emergency Solutions for sponsoring lunch and supporting the fire service professionals who serve communities across our state every day.

Lastly, thank you to Mike Legeros for taking time out of his day to capture photos and help document this important event for the North Carolina fire service community.

Earlier today, Engine 231 responded to a reported gas leak after a service line was accidentally struck by utility contractors. Engine 231 arrived on scene, secured the area, and deployed an attack line for standby protection. Crews remained on scene until the leak was safely controlled and secured by the gas company.

🚨 GAS LEAK SAFETY REMINDER 🚨
If you ever smell natural gas or suspect a leak:
• Leave the area immediately
• Call 911 from a safe location
• Never attempt to locate or stop the leak yourself

Please remember that road closures and blocked off areas are put in place for your safety. Natural gas incidents can quickly become dangerous, and driving around barricades or ignoring emergency personnel instructions places everyone at risk.
